Yeah, sorry guys, should've been more to the point.

We dont have the money that most other Countries have to offer players, hence why any decent players we produce head overseas.

AFL/NRL/NRU is well and truely established in Australia, and remember, we only have roughly 21-22 million people in this country.

And hell, even I play it, when I get the chance.. but ill be buggered if I can sit down and watch a match; either on the tv or at an actual game - just doesnt have the excitement that AFL has imo. (Why do you think the Poms always chant?: ) - they're bored )

So true.

Each to their own. If you find Soccer boring then thats your opinion (although idiotic )... This country doesn't consist of only true blue aussies who find soccer deadset boring. There are plenty of people here who are passionate about soccer, the gripe is that of major networks attempting to kill off the sport to promote AFL.

Now I'm not saying I'm against AFL, I do enjoy it at times just like I enjoy Soccer. One sport shouldn't be ruled out to promote the other. AFL is confined to Australia, whereas soccer is a global sport. Why limit a media influenced country to Aussie sports.

Channel 7 is just a poor choice for any sport. Why was channel 9/10 able to outbid for the AFL? cos they had the expertise to add more value to the product. Channel 7 screwed the rugby world cup right up, insisting on putting an hour of schoolboy humour on every night before showing the games after midnight. Even with the world cup as a lead-in, they couldn't turn super 12 into a product worth showing.

australian football just needs some stability for now. Starting with new franchises is a great idea, it eliminates the need to be of a particular ethnic group to feel welcome at most clubs. hopefully it will also mean I can follow one local team for more than a few seasons before they get dropped to state league or dissappear altogether.
The standard of local football isn't that bad, maybe comparable to the english 2nd division, which is still very watchable. It's the publicity and hype that it is failing to generate. having such a long break between top level seasons, combined with the lack of any free to air coverage of the premier league, is going to require a huge campaign before the a-league starts to generate interest.

I agree with everything you've said but the reason why chan 9/10 were able to outbid was because they also teamed up with Fox Sports (pay tv). Chan 7 simply could not afford to bid anymore and as such they lost and thought to themselves, "we have the olympics...we'll cash in on the advertising and show less than a third of the competing events..."

Idiots.

i used to work at channel 7 in IT, you wouldnt believe the amount of absolute fuckin pricks that work there. Thank god i am gone now *phew* . but yeh i agree with you they fucked up the game so much. I think the NSL will be alot stronger with less teams actually, i mean look at scotland, 10 teams and going strong

scotland going strong? you seen their results lately?
at least rangers beat celtic last night, that's about the only good thing that's happened in scottish football in recent years.
I thin kthe 1 city 1 team format can only be a good thing though.

I hate Channel seven too.

If theres anything I hate its breaking the golden rule of football broadcasting, and its putting a commercial break, when a match is playing.

What pissed me off, especially the 2nd leg against Uruguay is that, the situation was very serious, yet they had the balls to drop in a commercial break on every goal kick.

They've always done it, its a rule never to be a broken no matter what in any circumstances.

I can only accept commercial breaks at half time though.

As much as I want to see the A-League thrive, I don't think I will ever be as passionate about it as I was with the NSL and my beloved South Melbourne, the team I've been watching since 1992. Some great memories at Middle Park Stadium/Bob Jane Stadium and some good attacking football was played. The standard of football really wasn't as bad as everyone says it was..

standard of football was not bad in the NSL. But cutting the amount of teams down to 10 i think is going to get all the talent from 15-20 or so teams into 10 , which will be good for the standard.

should be interesting, i am going to try my hardest to support the sydney team
