this guy is a major martial artist

he probably messed up a bunch of that stuff but to us we'd never know the difference

if i ever get in a fight with someone at a bar i pray its not someone like that cuz you never know until its too late. i also pray they take pity on me because im drunk

Just for your information, you'd would litterally not believe most of the things unless you saw them for yourself that the human body is capable of under devoted martial arts training (think monks in the temples that dedicate 30+ years to training)

While this stuff is certainly impressive, people need to realize it's much closer to gymnastics than real martial arts (the kind that you would actually defend yourself with).

I'm sure he could put a hurtin' on someone, but as truly effective self defense, these tricks aren't very useful.

Very true - in fact, most of the people who seem to be able to pull this stuff off started doing Gymnastics first, then moved on to very gymnastic-related martial arts such as TaeKwonDo and Capoeira. People such as Joe Eigo aren't martial artists first - Joe's a breakdancer who's dabbled in the martial arts, but mainly does gymnastics...even though he's part of Jackie Chan's stunt team, he's a performer first.

Tim Pas, however, is a martial artist. This was just a clip showcasing some of his gymnastic ability - if you'd checked out his site, you'd see that he has vids of him doing Koryo Poomse, participating in some martial arts competetions, and dealing with weapons such as bo staffs, nunchaku, Chinese Broadsword, etc...

This is just a recruiting measure.

I respect martial arts... but how useful is it in an actual fight?

indeed, it looks good but in a real street fight its all about wrestling or judo..

you have time to throw one kick, maybe two if your lucky

The exertion you possess in a street fight comes from the fact that you KNOW you have body control - this flashy brand of Martial arts show in the video and at demonstrations is merely an expression of physical control. When you are truly confident in your ability to fight, the possibility that you will get into a fight is lessened. How many fights out there could be averted if one of the people just admitted he was wrong, or let go of his pride, or just diregarded the potential pain of the situation by just walking away? When you know you can fight, when you are a true martial artist, there becomes little need to actually use your abilites against others, especially the untrained.

Of course, as with most things, is merely situational. What was shown in the video may not have been the most effecient self defense, but having studied in WTF TaeKwonDo, you'd like to hope that Mr. Pas knows how to beat the shit out of someone to save his own life or somebody else's. The thing is, with all his martial training, he probably knows better than to get into fights in the first place. I'm, of course, not sure of this, but there are just certain thigns you expect from someone with as much discipline as he obviously possesses.

Only idiots get into fights - I don't care if you're a martial artist or not. But that's why it's called 'self-defense' not 'self-offence'.
