if you know how to play an instrument there is a huge advantage when you start but a lot of people don't phrase it right.

if you can physically play an instrument it usually means you have a learned sense of musical theory. However that is not always the case, most people teach themselves guitar and know nothing about musical theory.

you can study musical theory out of a book and understand as much as someone does that has been playing for 15years, you just don't physically have the motor skills. A lot of people don't know that.

oh my god.
Im not a producer, and I dont know how to read notes, but I know how to play tracks such as lethal industry, and traffic, and i dont even own a keyboard(a friend of mine has one)

but to not know how to play YOUR tracks, that is just sad
I wonder how many producers are like Armin.
I really like Armin's tracks and I have nothing against him.

Rank 1 is such a good example. One of the guys has got a classical background (plays piano, did a high musicaleducation) and the other one is a dj. Perfect combination.

As far as well, my fave's DuMonde, they can't play shit. Jam X is a dj, De Leon a lighttechnician, but they don't play instruments or have a musical background. I think a lot of that inconvenience can be helped with the productiontools, software and gear that got developed right now.

I think Its a shame that most Dj's don't play live from synth/midi keyboards at all the big events. I'm sure Tiesto can't play live, NU-NRG seem to be really good at it, mixing and playing live at the same time.

I seriously don't believe that, i was only messing around with a keyboard a few days ago trying to play that from scratch (and i cant even play keyboard) and it was simple. I'm sure Armin would remember what notes he used in that track!
Look at his bio, he had a lot of help with producing from an early age;
Jean Michel Jarre as a major influence, as well as Dutch producer Ben Liebrand, who later mentored him in his mixing and producing, Armin was soon cracking out consistently stand-out tunes that graced compilations across the globe, and his dj bookings were looking pretty healthy to boot.

I agree, thats a bit strange, you drop a keyboard to a producer and ask a tune and the man says: "I cant play this..."
So play one of your own tunes...
"Cant too.."

I have a accoustic guitar and like try some riffs...
but learn scales are a bit hard..

by the way...

Why wouldn't you just like to see him play a grand piano anyway, without coke?
How do you know he'd even take coke anyway?
