According to the CBC, rememberance day is about "divesity" and the "sacrifices."

What garbage. This country has no concept of war because *gasp* "in this day and age, there is no such thing as good and bad, except when a country uses military force." Or so I was taught in high school and sociology classes.

Rememberence day is about remembering the fact that our way of life, our freedoms, and prosperity does not come cheap. When our values and lives are faced with a threat, it needs to be dealt with..and unfortunately that often involves force. That means, dare we acknowledge, that people have to shoot guns, blow shit up, and kill people. This is the reality of war that we like to sweep under the rug and then bask under these euphemisms about "diversity" and "peacekeeping."

What do you expect from a country whose own prime minister said "Norway" instead of "Normandy" (twice in the same speach in front of our men and women in uniform) and another minister called "vimy ridge" "Vichy."

Although I have to say that I'm quite appaled by some of the things I saw in the city today. At 11:11 on the 11th of the 11th everyone should take a moment of silence in remembrance of the troops and people who fought in the wars. HOWEVER...it appeared to me that NOBODY did...i mean everyone just went along their business like nothing happened. At least official businesses like TTC should have stopped for a minute but no. I think it's a shame really and I think that we need to do more!

(I should mention that I was in a busy corner of the city at the time)

I guess growing up in Israel, I have different view on things such as remembrance day, but still I think this was very disrespectful today.

Here's to better times, during which our forefathers gave a damn about freedom and independence.

I still long for the day when we'll see those ideals and that dedication again in place of this smarmy self-righteousness (not to mention disrespect for the holiday and/or mindless attempts to use it for Bush-bashing).

If you are referring to our military history, you are a disrespectfull, ignorant twit, and I pity you.

Do a Google for Dieppe, Vimy Ridge, Ypres, and many more battles. The Merchant Marine navy, made up of thousands of Canadian civilians who were part of the vital supply convoys leaving from Halifax, the most important port in the world during WWII. So important that the German's sent Wolfpacks of U-Boats to the CDN coastline to sink them. The British would not of survived the winter had the supplies from North America flowed from Halifax.

Do yourself a favour. Go to the cbc.ca site, and read up on what this country has done in many international conflicts. You certainly wouldn't be enjoying this city if it weren't for people like my Grandfather.

1st of all, WW2 wasn't about getting food to Britain
2nd of all, all those battles don't compare at all to what the USSR (country where I was born) had to go thourgh. Hell D-day had only a toll of about 10 000 on the allied side. The battle of Stalingrad cost the lives of 3 000 000 Soviets.

Canada's contribution just doesn't seem to be that significant. So actually, by your logic, its YOU who certainly wouldn't be enjoying this city if it weren't for people like MY grandfathers.

u need to look at some World War I history

60 000+ Canadians died.

was it as many as the Russians, the French, Austria-Hungary?

probably not...

but either way, 60 000 Canadians died in that war. This day isn't about "my ancestors paid more than your ancestors" it's about paying respect to those who perished.
