Haha, I'm not laughing at you PvD Fanatic, as I have not yet even listened to your mix and you said you didn't edit anything after mixing, I just think it's funny that I used to edit in Sound Forge like mad when I first started mixing, and apparently it's almost standard practice for bedroom DJs.

absolutely true Dave. I was just wondering, u start a mix, f**k up, start over.. do it again and again... but that one time you get through a couple records, ur not going to start over, but you f**k up again, so I was just wondering if I could match the beats in my trainwrecks... that's all, i definitely am hear to learn.. and especially glad you meticulously explained to me what I did wrong... only way for me to learn...

You know what, I think I might record a little this Saturday before Sander at Vision and just might do that. I'm sure I'm nowhere near as good right now as a lot of you, but some scrutiny might help for improvement, especially at points where I've been trying to switch between different genres. I guarantee there will be a track each from PvD and BT.

On the subject of Sound Forge, I've just noticed a lot of friends who are starting out use it and it's mentioned in the forums a lot and I had no idea intially that it was so widely used. When I first really got into listening to EDM I just went to Best Buy and randomly picked the Acid Screenblast & Sound Forge package amongst a slew of other choices for the sole purpose of creating pseudo-mixes of my favorite tracks. It wound up becoming one of my best friends for recording and I'm just surprised that I wound up picking what arguably most people use (or maybe Ableton) without knowing what I was doing.

That is the absolute worst when you're well into recording, everything is going so well, and then you make a slight mistake that just ruins the flow of an otherwise excellent run. In my amateur way, & If you have Acid Screenblast too, what I normally would do is:

Save the mp3 after you finish, then go back and rerecord the transition part that you want to correct and save that as well. Then go into Acid and open both files, which will be on different lines next to each other. You can that cut out the part from the original mix and match up the corrected version. It may take a few tries, but keep listening to that part to make sure your edit is seamless. If the volume is a bit different between the mix and the correction, you can right click on the correction and insert a volume pan and move the line that appears to adjust to the same volume as the original. You can also insert a tempo change if the speed is different and then change it back when the original comes in again after the correction. Then save that project as a new Mp3, which will be your final demo.

I'm sure there are better ways to do it, but that's been my trial & error technique. It also shows I've made a lot of mistakes in the past Good luck with the mixing and look out for a review tomorrow.

I don't edit my mixes at all. Because if a promoter hears my mix and books me for a gig than they expect me to play very close to what they heard in the promo cd.

I only use Sound Forge 7.0 now to convert the Wav file of the mix to MP3.

I will eventually use Sound Forge for my production work

Good luck to all of you. It's great that you're all out there trying to get something going for you. I haven't listened to that mix yet, but I'll be sure to give it a listen. I may even have a mix or two of my own for everyone to listen to in the future. I figure I might as well put all this otherwise useless knowledge I have about EDM to good use. Maybe someday we'll all be the guys people are raving about.

Be Cool!

Hey, I just ran through your mix and I think you've got a good start here. Keep in mind I am not nearly as professional or experienced as Dave is, having heard some of the mixes he's posted and the knowledge he's displayed on the forums, plus there were a few tracks I wasn't too familiar with and may like after hearing them again. I will honestly say that you should give it a few more tries before giving out demos to clubs or promoters, but I do think I prefer your mix to quite a few openers I've seen, as I like a number of your tracks and you have several really good transitions, not to mention your noticibly-off transitions are only slight and nowhere near some live trainwrecks I've seen.

I do like Holden & Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning Mix), Randy Katana - In Silence (Txitxarro mix), Mojado - El Toro and I really like that you put New Order - Blue Monday (Rogue Audio Mix) in there. I think the transition into Blue Monday is well done and it's good to have a song in there that will stick out to people who really haven't heard much EDM, as it will help them get into the rest of your set. The transition into In Silence is also well done.

I think the transition into Traffic needs some more work and I agree with Dave that it might not be the best song to use for a demo, but if you want to use it, I think that with a little more work you can make a really good transition into Bodyshock, as it sounds good right around 69:00. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Marco V's style and would have left out Age of Love, nor am I big on the Sam Sharp or Marcel Woods tracks, but I will probably listen to it again and maybe get more into them. There are a few areas where I think with practice you can make it a little tighter, but there's not too much I would really consider trainwrecks, just not as perfect as I think you'll be able to do as you continue practice.

I think the main thing you should continue to work on is developing the flow of your set. Again, I'll give this a listen again soon and be more specific, but I just feel the first time through that the flow sometimes starts to build up, then slows down, then speeds up again. Perhaps you might want to put a real classic song (or maybe move Blue Monday) a little more toward the middle, as a peak in the buildup of the set and also have a real strong finisher. The D:Fuse song you threw in for your friend isn't a bad song, but it doesn't seem like a powerful close to a set, that leaves you wanting more.

In any case, good job and I think you can really develop this into a quality demo that can get you some gigs. Hope you get to play in Chicago sometime.

I agree, I should clarify that I have never played in a club yet, nor distributed anything to a promoter yet, just played some house parties, often with people unfamiliar with any Trance or House. The editing I've done has been for 2 purposes: (1) Editing parts on tracks that I think take away from the overall quality (e.g. the vocals in the middle of Aquanuts - Deep Sea), which I put on a CD-R to mix and (2) Post production on CDs I've made just to listen to at work, where I've made slight errors. I can see making a correction or two on an actual demo if it's something very slight that you normally do not mess up on if you're, say 50 minutes into an otherwise perfect recording, but I totally agree you should only give out a demo that is entirely representative of what you can produce live.

Speaking of which, I will work on a demo this weekend and maybe let PvD Fanatic get an opportunity to critique as well, as I have a way to go. Hopefully a set with some more vocals than the norm will be welcome!

Nice, I say by all means go for it. If nothing else, since you're already very much into EDM, it's a great hobby and you get to set forth your own interpretations of what you like. Good luck to you as well.
