The founders left because they wanted to see Winamp remain a relatively open source/free type of product and AOL has plans to bundle the player into content offerings, etc.

----

Just because the founders of a company quit, get fired, die or otherwise depart does not mean the end of a product.

Winamp will come back - as it is a viable product in a high-growth medium - the challenge was simply monitizing it in it's current form.

No need to cry over spilt milk. It's funny how fat-cat VC money stuffed founders sometimes delude themselves into thinking what they're doing is some just moral cause - when really, it's just business (make or buy, sell at a profit).

PS - I use 5.05 Pro to run 2HP.ca Radio.

That womans skin is greene.

Most of the little circular skins appeal to me. Except when I'm playing a set, and I'm looking for a particular song, and that slider that's all of a half inch long becomes a real hassle.

Sad to see winamp go. But it's not a big deal. Someone will jump in to replace them, and until they do we can try the rest of the crappy media players.

Yes, since the original developers had left the project, all of our winamp copies will start to malfunction, and the setup program (for those of us who keep a back up) will be corrupted so we can't reinstall it and have to move to WMP

you guys are using winamp 2.81?

nah...

try an AM ~200kHz frequency range receiver. bypass the local oscillator with a 3MHz crystal from maplins, you can get the thing to run on the same frequency as ur phone line, and multiplex the thing to receive the internet radio stations.

no compatibility problems.

no boot up times.

no crashes.

you can't skin it, but then if you're hard core that won't be a problem. (well, you could paint it)

rocks.

needs xp media center and a 3.2GHz P4 with 2 gig of ram & Nitro cooling to demodulate the output. but hey.

oh well.. and i was getting used to the new Winamp 5. i am loving the auto-hide feature on winamp. that is tight. i just dock the player on the top of the screen. i also like the multiple playlist, which was first implemented in winamp3. but what i don't like is how winamp takes 20% of my cpu when the original UI is open, but when i minimize my UI to the streteched auto hide UI, it goes down to the normal 3-5% cpu usage. ... too much graphic manipulation?

oh yes and i also like it when the regular UI is open, and you stretch the player, the beat graphics displays.

not too surprised tho...

AOL buying Time Warner & Nullsoft is like Ford buying a company with a division making matter transporters.

"oops, we've just bought a company that has a small division which we didn't know about, that creates a product which, if successful, will kill our business"

d'oh.
