I got a reply to this in my PM's (he gave me permission to post it)

Im going to respond to you on a more personal level, rather than on the board.

Music style, esecially when djing can be extremly challenging when you look at it in so many ways. I find myself constantly evolving in my own personal sound and my ultimate goal is to perfect my style of music and stay original. Its hard to stay original when you are not the one producing the music. Everyone has access to the same stuff (about 85% of the time). I dont think it is so much the genera of music you play I think it has more to do with presentation and the context you put that music in. Those two will define a "style" (to me). You hear all this "progressive" crap and people call that a genera...it isnt! Its a style. I guess since dj who play that deeper, darker, bouncy-er side of prog house/tribal house-esque stuff tend to build sets extremly smooth and thus causing progression....thus being progressive. I considered myself a progressive dj at one point and Im going to tell you 'progressive' isnt a genera of music. DnB....isnt better than breaks.....Breaks isnt better than house.....House isnt better than trance. (i cant believe I just said that! Shocked ). I think it is all about presintation. Developing a style is difficult and takes time to perfect or even get started.

I say...buy what you like....play what you like. But, I think you have to ask yourself what it is you wanna do as a dj...(im assuming you dj). Find that goal and you should be able to develop a sound.

Do you wanna make yourself happy as a bedroom dj?
Do you wanna play clubs and move crowds?
Do you wanna play backrooms and opening slots and slowly move things up?
Do you wanna close main rooms and take things down a notch without boredom?
Do you wanna do a little of all?

I prefer a good time slot. I enjoy a little pressure. Just dont sell yourself out. At the end of the day you will still be working your 9-5 or whatever. So enjoy the music.
