They are not a part of this "explosion" in terms of jumping on it's coat tails, Death Cab for Cutie was one of the forefathers of the movement.

I realize this. The music still irks me; I'm not a terribly big fan of Modest Mouse either

Sorry, I had to...

Here's the thing about emo threads: people only ever whine and complain and bitch and moan about how much they hate emo. Well why do these people hate emo, you might ask? Because emo is just somebody whining and complaining and bitching and moaning. See the correlation here?

I know this isn't a strictly emo thread, I just chose to share that with ya.

I see neither as worse...especially considering the fact that 'Indie' music, within itself, by the very definition thereof, is completely immune to being part of an explosion. It's like saying 'mainstream-underground'. Well what the fuck? It contradicts itself!

People are going to like what they are going to like - the reasons tend to be different though, and the only thing that should be looked down upon is liking a music merely because it makes you feel as though you 'fit-in' with some sort of crowd. You should appreciate the music for what it is, not just refer your opinions of the mindfucked "fans" onto your judgements of the music, itself. As with any true art form, there is worthwhile beauty perceivable only by those who want to see with eyes unclouded by a limited prejudice against the dangers of something new and foreign.

Plese focus your frustrations on the appropriate aspect. As with most things, this happens to be the people.
