I had the exact same problem too. I was about to go mental on the cart because I'd rebalanced the tonearm 3 times and then maxed the weight out and it still wouldn't hold the groove. Needless to say I was pretty pissed when I noticed the wire hanging down.

whats the name of that little arm that holds the tonearm up when you lift the little lever and lock it into that little clasp?(lots of littles )

i used to have a really bad skipping problem because the platter on my decks arent exactly flat (cheap belt drives) but just enough to where a certain point of a revolution would dip alittle and that arm would hold the tonearm and it would lose the groove

i tried setting the antiskate at 0 but it still skipped so i went at it with a screwdriver and lowered that little arm some and now it works fine

no. not many decks come straight from the manufacturer with carts, its usually the dealers put a cart in for you (unless its a shit dealer).

over here, its actually quite hard to get a deck without a cart. but then again we pay through the nose for them, so it better bloody had do!

Sounds to me like that's Mike's problem. I made the same mistake when I bought my tables. That counterweight is extra and typically unused.

ANybody ever played with the screws on the tonearm before? the top and side ones holding the tonearm, and no..its not the wires, ive tried 2 different carts+needles, should the tonearm be a little wiggly at the base? because i know it should only go left and right, not wiggle at all..right?

Tonearms should generally not wiggle.

Try to fix the screws on the tonearm a bit. They could be loose due to transport or a manufacturing problem.

Also check the counterweight on the tonearm, as mentioned before.
