Exodus: that's basically what it is, you can select which channel(s) you want to send (and on some mixers like the PCV-275, whether you want to send before or after you run it through the EQs), then you plug the SEND port on the mixer to the input on your effects unit, then plug the output on the effect unit into the RECEIVE port on the mixer. You can adjust the level of the send output using the SEND knob, and the level of the signal coming back into the mixer using the RECEIEVE knob. This allows you to adjust how much effect you hear, between completely dry (no effect) and the full effect.

Well said.

As far as my own experience, I have yet to add an effects unit to my setup, but in doing the research on which mixer to buy, I was impressed with the effects features on the 275. I can't imagine that you wouldn't get great sound from the 275 considering the amount of control you have (pre and post switch and levels).

how does send/return change the effects game? do you get more control/can you do cooler stuff?

what it changes is that you can now effect only one channel and leave the other alone if you want. you can also do it post EQ and pre EQ if you like. You can also cue what the effect is going to sound like before throwing it in live, which is essential.

I have a PCV275 as well, although i have never used the send return on it, what's wrong with it? does the sound quality suffer?

The only faults I've found, which may just be personal preference, are the kill switches are a little tought to manipulate, and the EQsdon't cut out completely. Other than that it seems like a great deal for the money.

Personally, I really like the feel of the kill switches. But he is right about the EQs, but of course, if you want to cut a band, that's what the kill switches are for.

i find both the eq's and the kill switches great on the 275, but i guess with the eq thing its personal preference.

wit regards to the send/return, i find it doesn't give such crisp sounds and its very eay to get a feedback type sound all over the wet signal. maybe i am doing something wrong but i have tried pretty much everything. i just have the efx500 on the master output of the mixer, it sounds great but i can't effect one channel at a time. i guess it means you have to give it a bit more variation otherwise it can get tiresome.

other than the send/return issues, i think the pcv275 is probably the best mixer you can get for the money. the faders are great, the x-fader is superb and lasts a long time. its very solidly built and its nice to have little features lik 2 headphone jacks, the line-in on the face of the mixer for easy hotswapping of kit, 2 grounding points as oposed to the normal 1 etc etc..

get both an effect mixer and an effects unit if you can afford it, its great fun

why? why not plug it in the send/returns like it's meant to go? then you can effect any channel you want, cue channels etc.
