Right now they're like the US at the turn of the 20th century. A lot of potential but not a real competitor just yet. Like I said though, the only thing keeping investors away is the need for structural reform. If that happens, get ready for an economic blitz ...

I for one hope that china can do some human rights/democracy reforms before that happens..

Can anyone else ever see other continental countries getting together? African Union? Latin American Union?

i want it to stay what it is now, common currency, free travel(kind of). I dont mind them deciding on some a small number of law because Europ has to be involved in a certain amount, like the fishing and agriculture policies.

But i dont like the fact that they are becoming more involved in taxation. They are trying to set tax levels to with in a certain limit. i.e you cant go under X%. i think individual countries should decide. It takes away a countries advantage.

and i certainly never ever want to see it as one country.

i know very little about africa, but i would say there are too many barriers in the way. Alot of countries are extremely different from each other. Europe worked well because there were many similarities between the countries. I suppose an African Union might work between a small number, but unlikely to happen for a long time i would think.

Not a phat chance in hell in Latin America. Too much bad blood and it is VERY divided politically. Plus they are all far more concerned with the US than they are with eachother. Their attempts at regional integration with just eachother have been resounding failures. CACM, Pacto Andino, ALADI, etc... Mercosur is working... sort of. Pacto Andino is trying to make a comeback, but its still not doing very well. You will see an FTAA and deeper integration with the US before Latin American only integration movements. The main reason for it is that Latin America doesn't have strong markets or political institutions. They are also tied down to the US market for exports and assistance. Basically it just isn't plausible and I doubt it will be in our lifetime.

The European Union is just the rebirth of the former Common Market. Trade laws have slackened a bit more and the Euro as a unified currency also helps this along.

The possiblities of the Europe being a nation will happen when the Christian Antichrist comes to unite the world. There are language barriers, but those are slowly being overcome due to English being the language of international business and many European nations are teaching English in their schools.

The big thing stopping will be the transfer of soverginity to a European president and parliment. First, problem is cohesion. The Dutch may have different intrests than the French. To make legislation that suits the entire nation of Europe will be hard as well. While the European Parliment now does have established political parties, these will expand as more countries/issues face the EU.

I really hope so, but i think it will take some time. I really like their efforts tho and i think it is great that they actually have started to talk with each other and cooperate instead of start war with each others. I know very litle about the african union (anyone have any links with info about it?) and i didnt even know it excisted a latin american union (does it?).

Yep...you've got it. China is the real deal. Europe is not a worry: a stagnant economy, high unemployment, negative population growth, increasing social burden on younger generations, increasing burden to provide for hostile immigrant populations, and complete lack of any political party or figure to deal with any of the problems.

Think bureaucracy is a burden in the US? How about adding another level of bureaucracy to already overbearing European governments! There's your acquis communautaire.

People discuss the rising euro like it's a problem for the US. On the contrary, it's a massive problem for the EU. Just when Europe could use a boost in foreign investment and trade to pump up employment, foreign dollars are coming back to the US to buy now-cheaper goods.

China is the real power balance to the US, and as they continue to streamline their economy and liberate internal markets, it's gonna be a beautiful capitalist sight to see. Both the US and Europe understand this - American businesses already have significant presence there, and European politicians visit on an irregular basis to boost trade ties and cut deals for companies.

Actually Arican Union and Latin American Union I made up, as a hypothetical group similar to that of the EU.

At this moment I see Africa is too separated and have way too many ethic problems to form together and with the larger economic countries like south africa they may feel burdened by having to bear the brunt of reconstructing impoverished countries and countries like egypt who are more middle eastern than african in my mind would be a big question mark, especially with the large economy they have. I think a united africa though would really help solve a lot of the problems the continent has such as racial disparity, religious fighting, impoverishment, aids reform, and with all the oil and other resources africa has they could have quite an economy together. I don't personally forsee it happening in my lifetime.

A united Latin American front I am not really sure what to think about.

I don't know what the world would be like with a EU, Afrian Union, United States, China, India and a Latin American Union. It might actually be worse off than we think with 6 major powers all vying for control and thinking they all have the upper hand. It would probably prevent military conflicts because they would be wars that no one would ever win with the vast aliances. I do think that poverty would decrease, world trade and economic levels would be more at an equilibrium, and incomes would rise, as good points.
