I have a midi keyboard and alot of time on my hands, so, I'm ready to start exploring production and would like to start in the right place. I'm not a computer genius so, I'll never go anywhere trying to learn four programs at once.
My top 4 was random, and meant to stir up opinions. Sometimes the best way to get people's opinion's out is to show an opposition. I don't want to her the talk about, begin with this, then move to this, than move to that. Fuck that.
I'de rather just start with the best and take a little longer to get really good at it.
SO, DON'T ASSUME EVERY THREAD IS JUST B/C SOMEONE WAS BORED AND WANTED TO KNOW IF HE COULD THINK OF A GOOD THREAD TOPIC.

I REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT YA'LL THINK!

Download demos i say, and try them. You can ask but it won't help you much, since everyone will base their opnion on their own favorite software.

I would say Reason is great to start, but Alanzo will say it's crap since it has no vst support. Get my point?

Funny i never remember i made a topic with the question whats the best software is for producing, but i started and now after 3 years i got pretty decent at it.

Just try and go with the flow .

I started out with Fruity Loops way back in the day, then moved onto Reason, tried Cubase and didnt like it, then moved on to Logic.

Out of all four I would have to rate Logic the best, if you're willing to learn it. I remember saying over and over again to producer-friends of mine, "Logic is so Illogical!" Finally I got the hang of it and have been using it ever since. I wouldnt say that I've mastered any of those programs though, not by a longshot, and I'm positive 99% of professionals havn't either, because there is so much to learn.

A lot of reason stock sounds are nice, but can be easilly recreated with many vst's or even stock synths in a program like Logic, or you could even use Rewire through logic to use both at the same time. I would never go with reason again though, just because it dosen't have VST support, and some VST's such as ones like Spectrasonics atmosphere can create some very powerful sounds.

The stock synths and effects in logic are also very, very nice, so it would be my #1 pick by far.

But also, as mentioned before, the best tool is knowledge of your sequencing programs and sounds!

gah. there is no best. 'best' is whatever you feel comfortable using. my advice is to stop thinking that some of these applications are only good for starting out. some are only good for intermediates. and some are prerequisites before you can write a good pro sounding tune (the so called 'professional' or 'expert' sequencers). thats all rubbish. you use whatever you find does the job easiest and with least hassle. use a tracker if you feel its the most natural way of writing music. if your songs and ideas are good, it'll show.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm gonna have to do a little research to figure out what a VST is?
