that is exactly the first thing that i thought of. that is one of the major incidents you learn about in every industrial safety class you will ever take.

by the way, you say here that the problem was due to not being up to safety standards but the bottom line was that it was people being dumbasses. most major saftey incident come down to human error. it also happens a lot more on night shift. safety standards are about mistaking proofing systems from people. i've also seen reports about Bhopal that attributed it to sabotage.

and there is some evidence that it was sagotage, but not really enough IMHO... of course Union Carbide backs the sabotage thing 120%.

i was also tottally thinking about this exact incident. i saw something about it on a documentary once.

what the heck was the point of the vote?

i remember hearing about a lot of people dying in india because a pesticide plant released a huge gas cloud overnight, that killed many people.

so its a chemical accident.

just making a point in my seminar that the issues surrounding the aftermath of Bhopal aren't getting the attention it deserves.

i disagree with that. in relevant industries it gets a lot of attention. it is one of three major safety incidents in recent industrial history that is used to set an example of how the safety industry has progressed. (and i forgot what the other two are, maybe that nuclear plant in russia was one...) i work in an industry that is heavily impacted by OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies and we put in a lot of effort to make sure our facility and product is safe for our employees, community and customers. Bhopal was one of those events that reshaped the way industry approaches safety. Just cause the general population doesnt talk about it anymore doesnt mean that its effects arent considered seriously in industry.
