One of my favorite openings was for the main set of the night, with Underworld - Cowgirl (Bedrock Remix) at +8 or 9. The intro for the track worked great for setting mood (dim basement), and then mixed great into some slamming dark trance at medium-low pitch.
When I'm lazy and decide to take the standard prog -> trance -> tech route I've usually started with Sasha & Emerson - Scorchio or Tone Depth - Rumblefish, at about +4 or 5. |

ummm sometimes i like to use george michael - amazing 
i always thought it would be cool to start a set with a low, bassy rumble, like earthquake sounds in movies. just to wake every one up
starfighter - apache has kind of a cool into, paul used that for a while, once in a while he uses that train sound.
