Re: Whatever happened to English football clubs being alright?
| quote: |
The only conclusion is that English football has concentrated for too many years on marketing, |
In 1992 English Clubs were facing huge costs, as the scale of meeting the recommendations of the Taylor report (new rules to improve the stage of the game) became apparent. In addition many top clubs voiced growing concerns over their inability to compete for the top players in the transfer market and bridge the gap with European clubs who had advanced considerably during the English Clubs enforced exile from European competition.
A 5 year ban equalled a 10 year drop in playing standards .
Just look at the record for English clubs just before the ban.
European Cup
1977 Liverpool
1978 Liverpool
1979 Nottingham Forest
1980 Nottingham
1981 Liverpool
1982 Aston Villa
1984 Liverpool
UEFA Cup
1981 Ipswich Town
1984 Tottenham Hotspur
Cup Winners Cup
1985 Everton
Do you think there be a need for the 'breakaway' Premier League if there wasn't the 5 year ban (6 for Liverpool) on English clubs?
Maybe it would be still called Football League Division One, and who knows maybe Man United wouldn't of dominated in the 1990s, Everton crowned European Champions or another decade of domestic dominance for Liverpool?
English football has focused on so much for marketing, because nothing else would rescue them from the effects of the ban.

so your saying the reason the english teams dont do well in europe is because of foreign? If english players were good enough, they would get on ahead of the foreign players.
If united had to have a team with only english players they would be shit. look at them now. First 11 theres scholes, rooney, ferdinand, nevilles, giggs and thats its. They would of never won the champions league back in 99 or whenever without the foreign players. If english players were good enough they would make it onto the teams anyway
if england put a cap on foreign players it would be even shitter then it is now |
no STUPID...do you not know what "wholly" means? It is part of the problem and many people will tell you so. English players ARE good enough, but with so many imports, there are limited spots for English players to come up through the ranks. The same thing is happening, though much worse, in Scotland. This fact has also had a dire effect on the NATIONAL teams. Scotland used to actually compete...now they're shit. Why? Because hardly any Scottish players play in Scotland anymore.
Plus you know, I'd also argue the EPL is lacking these days in quality BECAUSE of all the imports. Swan diving Europeans (read Christiano Ronaldo and his like) have taken much of the physical element out of the English game in the recent years and the influx of non-English managers have seen the death of old style English football. Does anybody even play the long ball anymore?
All I'm saying is, the English Premiereship is based in England comprised of all English teams. Therefore, to protect their game and their great league, the English teams should start thinking about capping the amount of foreign players a team can have. Other European Leagues should do the same. Look at Liverpool for instance...that idiot Benetiez comes in and sells off every English player except Girrard and ALMOST got rid of him too! It's better for the supporters if they have home grown talent.
But what would you know anyway? You're from Ireland so you can't identify.

Actually he only sold Murphy and Owen.
Oh he didn't want to sell Owen, Michael Owen made up his mind about going to Real anyway, and Benitez didn't want a Bosman situation, so he had to sell him.

So the EPL is lacking in quality these days, and too fix it, there should be managers who like to play the long ball approach?! Thats the most painfully shit form of football to watch.
Your a complete spanner. Beneztiz comes in and sells every English player? oh jesus. He begged gerrard to stay actually, and he didnt have much choice over owen. Since when did he sell off carragher and kirkland?
here go and learn something about football and come back to us. Cos your just making a tit out of yourself at the moment
