Even better, I could use the money to go to college and get a degree ...

I am not stupid you know - I wouldn't go around spending the money - I would only get what I REALLY need. If you only believe me. I'd put it into some good use.

My list (if it's tax free):

1 years' worth of rent: $10,800
Student Loan: $ not saying
Immediate Expenses: $7,000 (includes booze & days of fried brain cells and lots of vitamines hehehehe)
Rainy Day Emergency Fund: $7,000
Savings for Future New Business: $ here goes the rest

But if it was me, I prolly wouldn't hand it to the Police or the bank (their $$ is insured, and they make enuf off us on service charges).
If I couldn't live with my conscience.....I'd prolly give it to the foodbank....to feed those starving around this holiday season. My card would say....."With warm wishes for this holiday season from your local herb & drug store"

i would have kept it, not used it until something came out in the news. if nothing came out in the news about it then i would use it bit by bit. like someone said, if it's just lost from a deposit or something then it is insured.

as in? example?

I can't believe some people man... she literally got handed $40,000 and she gave it up. How stupid can you be?!!! Finder's keeper's, sucker!

And how easy is it spending that much money? Very! Get a place downtown, pay around $700 rent (cash) each month, get a car for $4-5Gs (pay in, you guessed it, cash!)... get out of school and forget the degree, start my own business (cash is there again to cover all the startup costs, if any), and then pay the OSAP every month a grand or two to keep their mouth shut, while keeping the rest of the money for everyday expenses (booze, drugs, girls, etc).

If I were to find that money and keep it. I'd open a Savings account and deposit small amounts over a few years.

THe money was actually dropped off there by Securicor and the cops are actually investigating if it was an "inside" job.

As for myself I would prolly hand it in as well.I'm not THAT hard up for $$$ BUT if I was given $40,000 I would pay off my car loan & travel a bit and check out the big ass Trance parties in Europe...

That lady has great morals and that act alone teaches her kids a very valuable life lesson.
$40,000 or $1,000,000 the amount doesn't matter.

Sure with her social status one could argue that she could have used the money but in the end it would have still been wrong. What message would that have sent to her kids had she kept it?

That fact that the bank gave her $2000 just goes to show that her good samaritan deed wasn't without its just reward.
A nice jesture on the bank's part considering they didn't really owe her anything.

I think this lady is awesome!

On a darker note however, if she had kept the money it does now sound like the money is marked and she could be OWING $40,000...

even after giving up the 40K, TD gave her a 2,000 rewward for returning it, However the government told her that, that 2,000 would be taken out of her welfare cheques. So she even gave the reward money back! Mcquinty then invited her to parliament and promised that she would be able to keep the 2K and have a regular welfare cheque. I must admit, it feels good to know that people like this still exist.

Funny, cause I was just wondering what Welfare was going to say about the 2K...
Another nice jesture from which nothing was really owed.

It's amazing what transpires from a little honesty.

She deserves everything that's happening from her self-less act and I love reading about it.

Read and learn people!
