Spotting a probspot track is just as easy as identifying a paul van dyk baseline.

can I get some Cheese on my Egg Mcprogin?

At least this makes me venture more into the sounds of progressive. Frankly speaking, if not for Markus' GDJB, I wouldn't be into the progressive sounds now.

whatever

markus is trying to push a certain sound/style - over the past 2 years markus has developed his own style (which isn't easy IMO), so let him do whatever he wants - its his radio show and he should be allowed to play "mcprog" or any other stuff that he wants - if you don't like "mcprog" then don't listen

"American Progressive" is a better name. Describing something as "American" already has a pejorative connotation of something mass-produced with poor emphasis on quality, appealing to the lowest denominator. American news, American cars, American cheese, etc.

In addition to this negative flavor, "American progressive" is a neutral description of where the subgenre originated and has developed: In the United States. Gabriel & Dresden began the sound from San Francisco, and Markus Schulz brought it to Miami, where it has since become the dominant style.

McProg is okay as a colloquial term, but American Progressive is better as a formal label.

Why is it that when something becomes popular it automatically becomes crap?? Just because Markus and his style of prog has become more popular over the last year or two, that doesn't make what he's playing rubbish. If you don't like it, dont listen to it, and stop whining.

I hate harcore/hardstyle, so I don't listen to it. I think the people who make it should have their balls ripped off with a fishing hook, but I dont whine on the internet about it, I just dont listen to it.

Actually, while your argument makes sense at first sight, i disagree. When a certain style becomes popular the tendence is for everyone to make similar stuff, until it becomes more and more standart, the producers get short of ideas, and the labels expect the tracks to follow the formula cause they sell.

But i think the "mcprog" phenomenon is a little bit more complex than that, cause when GDJB started to become popular the tracks were a bit different. With time, it started to have more and more epic trance elements.

When did the quality of music start being a factor of how popular it is, on what radioshow it is getting most air time (if any), from what record label it comes, who made it, etc.??

I don't have a problem with the tracks Markus plays, nor the tracks Armin plays. What I think is a problem is the fact that tracks that get a big response from the listeners are tracks that they will play on the show again and again and again and again. They're sticking with the tried and tested because the people demand it, so it is not completely their fault. But when you figure that both Armin and Markus are huge DJs that get sent a lot of tracks for free every week, you can't help but wonder why they are not playing them instead. I wouldn't even mind hearing them throw in some older tracks if that would mean that they would forego spinning any mix of Jump the Next Train for the 32904832nd week in a row. Armin didn't start hammering tracks week in and week out until about a year ago, so I wonder if something is going on in the background that we don't know about. Or maybe he is just trying to please the fans too much. Both he and Markus are very good DJs who are capable of putting together some nice sets without having to fulfill everyone's requests.
