well props to shockwav and lynx then, but i attribute it's popularity to b.s.e. because he associates it with nothingness which leads to random hilarity. w00t! w00t!

I didn't ask for this god-given hilarity. I only thank him.

you guys are all fooken hilarious.... i've admired and been astounded by "the w00t" for months now. I'm trying to get government funding to further explore the roots and history of "the w00t".

Let us keep this thread going, a monument to "the w00t". A tribute, if you will, to the single largest internet slang enigma that is....
the w00t!

I came across this while trawling the web

l33t (variants, |337 etc)

this derived from elite, but is pronounced "leet". it has grown to mean more than just elite, however, basically if you're l33t, you're damn cool, the best player around, and all other teenage fantasies. it's mainly used for bragging purposes, but sometimes in praise of a great player, i.e. "man that d00d's a l33t $n1p@h!" (golly, that fellow's marksmanship is unsurpassed!)

w00t! - simply, woohoo! some people use it to mean "what?", but this is incorrect.

now a tricky one - 0wn.

since l33t speak evolved in first person shooters, most of it's terms are related to this area. if you 0wn someone, it means you can consistently kill/beat them. the implication, of course, is that you are better than them.

a technically incorrect but latterly widely acceptable usage, is that 0wn can be roughly translated as "kill". in this sense it is used in the past tense, e.g. "i just 0wned a panzer!"

note that using a zero instead of an o is important, and necessary if you want to gain credibility in the l33t community.

other terms are slightly easier to understand, for instance, haXor means hacker, haXored means hacked ("hackered"), suXor means sucker etc. note that haXor is pronounced as spelt, i.e. “hacksaw”. The same goes for suXor and any other variants.

apart from these few terms, l33t speak is largely improvised. the important thing is to substitute letters with other symbols that look similar, along with a liberal sprinkling of caps. please note that aLtErNaTe CaPs, although being fashionable for some time, are now considered rather tired and passe, and so should be avoided.

j00 – you. The j is sometimes used as a y in other similar words, like j00r (your) and j0! (yo!)

letter substitutes. this is by no means a comprehensive listing, the idea is that you make them up yourself

just a few examples:

A - 4, @

B - 8, &, 6

L - 1, !, |, I, [ (anything vaguely straight will do)

E - 3 (of course!)

O - 0

S - $, 5

T - 7

then there are combinations, /\/\ (M), /\/ (N), |> (D) , etc

an old favourite is "ph" instead of "f", eg, ph33r (fear).

when you are composing a sentence in l33t, try to change as many letters as you can. also, make sure that any letters you cant change are a mix of caps and lower case.

of course, you dont have to do a letter for letter translation, if the meaning can be put across another way. hence, d00d (dude), l3w7 (loot), and a personal favourite, pr00n (prune) (not to be confused with pr0n – porn)

one last thing, regarding the combination letters - try not to use more than about two per word, for example, minimum - you can have /|/||/\///\/\/_//\/\, which looks like some 80's horror, or m|/\/N1mu/\/\, which is far more l33t, and misspelled to cap it off. l33t speakers will rarely depart from the monosyllabic norm, however.

i hope this helps, however if you come across any particularly difficult passages of l33t i'll be happy to help you out

regarding the haX0rs,

i very much doubt that any real hackers speak in l33t. remember we are dealing with teenage kids trying to show off - a true hacker will be known by his works, not his words.

i suppose people use it mainly just to add to their bragging credentials, "| 4/\/\ a |337 haXoR, ph33r me!!" (i'm a rather handy hacker, you'd better watch out)

i think, but i'm not sure, that the X came from the pronunciation of "hacks", or "sucks" (sux)

oh, and if anyone claims that they are a l33t haXor in an attempt to piss you off, just accuse them of being a script kiddie, that is, someone who uses pre-written programs to hack and has no real skill. of course they are probably not even that, but it's handy to know.
