I realize that subways cost a bloody fortune, but so do a lot of businesses. Are subways as a concept so unprofitable that no private enterprise would be interested in building one? Or are there government regulations that prevent them from doing so? Or is it simply an idea that no one has thought about trying yet?

I'll bet a lot of people would pay double or triple fares to get on a north/south subway in the east and west ends - or an east/west subway up in Vaughan or along the King/Front/Gardiner area. It's just too bloody impossible to get anywhere by car down there, and you'd probably end up paying more for parking and gas anyway.

Plus there are days like today when only crazy people (like me) actually want to drive. Most sane people take the subway if they can.

Private enterprise is a bad thing in socialist canada.

I would argue that this plan should go even further. More north south lines in the west end. And a Dundas line. Furthermore it should be integrated with a much better regional rail and bus system to service the immediate suburbs from Hamilton to Oshawa to Richmond Hill.

THIS would get me out of my car. As it is the current system doubles or triples my time, costs just as much or more, and never runs at the times i need it to.

In Argentina for example i could take the train almost any time of day or night and no matter what i was able to get where i needed to even at 4am. This is the third world we are talking about too!

Yes well, be that as it may, I'm not really sure why nobody has taken it upon themselves to pick up the slack with Toronto's transit system. It seems like something that could make a lot of money - just look at the 407...

I don't think the government will let them. They tried privately to build a high speed link to the airport from Union and i think that private deal fell through.

BTW the ultra efficient and cheap transit system in argentina is fully privately owned with competing buses from different companies on the same routes.

I know how to use transit. I used to take the TTC to and from work every day - it was an hour-and-a-half trip minimum, both ways, so that wasted 3 hours of my day if not more. And it cost $4.50 per trip - that's $45 a week, MUCH more than I pay in gas!

No sane person would willingly take the TTC under such circumstances unless they couldn't afford a car. But I'd happily leave my car at home and take public transit if I could take the Yonge line up to Vaughan and take, say, a Highway 7 or Langstaff line to Weston.

yes, i do realize that the logic is not the best but it is really hard to change people's minds about how they travel. i hate taking the bus. no matter how good the service would be, i would hate taking the bus because there are other people on it and some are pretty weird and digusting. the only time the transit system is busy is 7-9 and 3-6. why would the city waste money to expand, raise ticket prices and time if people are still going to drive.

But people wont drive. You think people enjoy sitting in traffice every day for an hour and a half? If you could just get on a train in comfort with relative efficiency it would beat the hell out of taking the car. Imagine sitting on a train sipping coffee and not worrying about anything and getting to work in about the same amount of time?

Ive experienced it. Its great. (only my coffee was a beer )

Ive always said that those who run Toronto have no vision at all. They waste money on cadillac homeless shelters that no one uses and ignore the real problems.

Thats fine because we are already on our way to becoming Detroit.

Detroit = Many office towers and condos downtown surrounded by miles of ghetto wasteland surround by endless suburbs (where most people actually live) basically its a three ringed concentric model

Traffic, taxes and homeless people as well as crime are moving people to places like mississauga, Newmarket and even Barrie. Idf politicians dont get of their high horse then they will destroy toronto as we know it.

I remember hearing some politician once say "people are willing to pay substantially higher taxes to live downtown because of the prestidge that having a downtown location brings". This is the kind of thinking thats killing the city.

Good Transportation, average taxes and clean streets are the reason people want to live downtown. DO SOMETHING TO MAKE THESE HAPPEN!

but by privatizing the transit, you'd have to pay more than one fare (for each), no?

like in Tokyo

Yeah, tell that to the people making these decisions... the city council, politicians, etc.

Why can't all the cities be designed like Paris, for example? All the office buildings and high-rises are located where? Away from the downtown! The downtown Paris has almost nothing to do with business offices, buildings, etc, and guess what - it's always full of life, it's the place where people actually spend their time during the day or night. Our downtown on the other hand is deserted after 5pm. The only area where you can actually catch some people and some action is a bit of Queen St. and Richmond St. on the Friday/Saturday. Disgusting...

Btw, I'd also like to suggest getting rid of all the Streetcars and building a damn subway system underneath (either on Queen or King or something along those lines). The damn streetcars are slowing everything down - traffic, cars, themselves!

Depends. If you can legally set limits on fares much the way the government controls cable and phone company charges then you can have a stable pricing system.

See? Im not 100% against government protectionism. Only when it's done properly.

Because the north american dream is the big SUV the 20 room suburban house and the big backyard that nobody uses.
