The concept of the movie was A+ and while they certainly did push the envelope, it appeared as if they couldn't make up their minds on exactly which direction to push it. I loved the idea of making the Fokers the Jewish-democrat-laid-back-island-loose-clothed-live-life-to-fullest type opposites of the uptight Byrnes. My biggest problem was I didn't like how they made the Fokers appear incompetent when compared to the Byrnes. I think Mr. Foker should have been a successful lawyer who knows whats what rather than the stay-at-home dad who "won a few cases in his day" and Mrs. Foker should have been emphasized more as a successful doctor rather than the sex-therapist while keeping the usefulness to the plot of the latter occupation. The movie could have worked this angle to show that while the philosophy of the Fokers might seem a bit strange at first glance, it does hold professional weight as a rebuttal to the philosophy of Mr. Byrnes. This concept was approached at the dinner scene when arguing about how to nurture a crying child but then the movie seemed to take a sharp turn away from it.
As should have been expected, I feel Meet the Fokers fell victim to the "curse of the sequals" as most tend to do albeit some exceptions (Spiderman 2). The acting was supurb, which isnt surprising considering the cast and any misgrievances should be forgiven for they did the best with what they had to work with. The writing made the biggest mistakes taking old jokes too far and throwing in plot twists without having the decency to untangle them in any kind of sensible fashion. I was very confused with Gaylord's 15-yr old son. He is his son, he isn't his son, he did know about it, he didn't know about it? Even when he finally came to terms with it, he seemed to handle it pretty well. "Wow, I have a 15-yr old son I didn't know about, that's crazy." And what the hell happened with the Mr. Byrnes & Mrs. Byrnes sex-therapy revival subplot? That seemed to drop off a cliff and have the pieces swept up at the last minute.
All in all, an OK movie, but disappointing because I was expecting better. |
