Got this for Christmas and am about a third of the way through. It is funny stuff.
On a side note, anyone here about Crossfire being canned?
quote:
Mr. Klein [new president of CNN] specifically cited the criticism that the comedian Jon Stewart leveled at "Crossfire" when he was a guest on the program during the presidential campaign. Mr. Stewart said that ranting partisan political shows on cable were "hurting America." Mr. Klein said last night, "I agree wholeheartedly with Jon Stewart's overall premise." He said he believed that especially after the terror attacks on 9/11, viewers are interested in information, not opinion.
Yeah, unfortunately Tucker Carlson is getting a new show on MSNBC, so it'll be him and Joe Scarborough back to back. MSNBC is basically becoming the new Fox New Channel. They've recently been having Crossfire-style debates about whether God was punishing mankind for being sinners by sending the tsunami and why Republicans "overwhelmingly" represent mainstream America. I think it's time Jon Stewart was given a real new program!
Oh, the best quote from that Crossfire debacle was Stewart telling Carlson "You come on after Judy Woodruff's Inside Politics, I come on after a show featuring puppets crank calling people, so who's supposed to actually report the news here?"

I thought that was a great comment by Stewart. He certainly makes an astute and hilarious point. However the broader implications of that discussion are that statistics show more and more Americans turn to The Daily Show to get their news updates. In that regard, Stewart dug his own grave with that comment--by his own admission, he basically said that there is nothing really newsworthy about his show(which hopefully sensible people already realize), yet more and more people turn to him for their news. Anyway, I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at that exchange of words.

I like Jon Stewart's comedy and The Daily Show is genius but its not a news show. However, I'd rather people got their news from The Daily Show than watch FOX. Personally, I wish everyone would read several international news sources on a regular basis but I know thats not going to happen in this lifetime. I do chuckle knowning that real journalists are afraid of a comedian. Sad world we live in.

Couldn't agree more. The Daily Show should only really be used as a satirical compliment to real news, but apparently only 11% of Americans read the newspaper anymore. True, there is the internet and other new media outlets, but many of the other 89% aren't checking them out either. It's great that so many more people registered to vote in the last election, but it's scary if many voters aren't familiar with what's going on in the country & the world.
