Hey we get street cred in COR for being in the Pirate Scene?

In that case: http://web.textfiles.com/ezines/INQUISITION/inq-02.txt

That's from 95, I wrote the letter to the Editor! back when my nick was Subterfuge instead of Subey, back when I ran T.M.O.D.I. the hottest Pirate BBS ever!

I imagine that a lot of you have, at some point, been interested to know exactly how the whole "piracy" thing works. This article is very good in terms of how the author goes about explaining the way it all works.

I'd add more to this... but that would get me in trouble (with more than just TA admins, most likely.) Just enjoy the article, and please don't send me PM's asking if I know how to hook you up with releases or any bullshit like that. (It has happened in the past when I've posted things like this, and it's annoying.)

The next time you're downloading a song from one of your favorite P2P programs, though, remember this link.

EDIT: I'm a bit more reluctant to post this one... because I sort of know Bram and he's in a lot of shit right now, but this is just too good of a read for me to let you guys miss it.

It's about BitTorrent. How it started, how it works, etc.

Knowledge is power.

Dude I'm gonna send you like a dozen PM's right NOW !

Ok now I'm going to run before you hack the shit outta me
........nice article tho..

Re: Re: Wired Magazine - How the whole "piracy" thing works.

Know what i hate?

When noobs ask "ooh when is [insert leet group name] gonna release 'x movie' or rip 'x game'"

They think that release groups sit on a bunch of games and movies and simply wait to release them. They dont know about the actual trouble groups go through to access whatever it is they specialize in.

And sure, articles like this keep bringing the "scene" wide open to noobs to understand how it really works, and thats good and all, but this is open to cock sucking feds as well!

The feds have known about topsites and such for years. That's not the problem they're having. The problem is that they can't find the people who are running them. Every time a popular topsite gets shut down, at least two new ones crop up. There's always somebody who wants to make a name for themselves. It works much like a terrorist organization, in fact. There are always "sleeper cells" ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. This is because the "scene" is a strong community. For most of the people involved it's more important to perpetuate the existence of the underground than it is to win races and such.

It's a complex subculture... but a fun one to be a part of so long as you aren't trying to turn a profit or something.

Yup, but theres always a few assholes that ruin it...

BTW, about the feds knowing about "that which we should not speak of"....there's always pub-scanning noobs which give more than enough play time for the law to rid themselves of more important matters.

Unfortunately, this is also true.

There are, of course, people who specialize in teaching newbies and assholes a lesson about network security.
