If they die instead, then I'm the one who has to bear the worse fate. And if you really care about someone, you would want them to suffer the lesser of two evils.
I can understand your confusion as someone who has lived a sheltered life where death seems to be the worst possible fate, but in reality there are many things worse than death, and if my loved one must die to be protected from something worse than death, then of course I would choose that.

In that situation, I would be willing to die of course, but I'm not sure it could ever happen, because I don't know if I could love someone who could be happy at my death.
