Well this seems like a make or break month for the americans in iraq..a rock and a hard place seems appropriate..if they have elections at the end of the month as promised(the sunni muslims are mostly going to boycott these elections and the largest sunni political party..the iraqi islamic party..withdrew all candidates last week stating that security fears made it impossible to have a credible election, because people will not go to the polls for fear of being attacked)the outcome will most definatly favour a landside victory for the shi,ite political partys.

Now at the same time the sunni political partys have warned that if the elections do go ahead as planned without the participation of the iraqi islamic party that they will consider any elected assembly as undemocratic.
The sunni partys want the elections delayed for at least 6 months or until they consider the security situation has improved(which imo dosnt seem likly any time soon)and the general feeling is that if the elections do happen at the end of this month as george bush insists they will, that it is the american and british troops that the sunnis will seek out to bear the brunt of there fury..ie more attacks in revenge for holding the elections.

Osama Bin Laden has also has also urged a boycott of the elections and has warned iraqis that they would be treated as "infidels denouncing our great god" and other known insurgent groups have echoed similar warnings in recent weeks.

So best of luck to the troops is all i can say..glad its not me.

Consdering a number of points made in Zig's post, it is very apparent that this election is not going to go well, especially if held this month. If it is a legitimate election with little Sunni involvement, there is a very high risk that Iraq will become a theocratic state, which would be much to the dismay of those who favored the war. Sad to say but it's very possible we could get rid of every insurgent and terrorist in Iraq and still we could ultimately lose if the country were to become a state like Iran, because Bin Laden desires this type of government to Saddam's secular regime. Saddam was clearly a bad guy, but taking him out and letting the Shi'ite majority decide who leads may create a far different Iraq than the Bushies imagined.

Security forces apperantly on election day will be provided by the newly trained iraqi forces(who imo havnt shown much stomach for a fight with insurgents so far)and coalition forces will be held in reserve for more serious incidents, which im sure there will be many.

Ilad Allawi the prime minister has considered posponing the election or staggering it over several weeks to maximise security resources(not a bad idea imo)but he is quoted last week as saying "we are damned if we do and damned if we dont" because any move to pospone the elections would also imflame shi,ite resistance.

And after years of persucation at the hands of Saddam Hussain and his Sunni minions, the shi, ites (60% of all iraqis)are demanding what they see as ther rightful leadership role.

and that as i see it is the rock and the hard place.

I actually know middle eastern ppl and ppl in contact with Iraqis. They are NOT happy about us being there. The only thing our presence there is doing ensuring more terrorist strikes on American soil by making new enemies.

Yes I'm aware of this. I believe yes they did cheer us in and were pro getting rid of Saddam but obviously that isnt the case now.

Lets be specific the Kurds and certain groups in the South were happy yes. But most others were either against it, ambivalent, or just against him being removed by an outside force rather than internal rebellion.

200,000 insurgents? No problem, we probably got a couple billion bullets, plus other assorted munitions to send the lot to Allah.

How can an election be democractic if it's forced on people in the first place. The majority of Iraqis don't even want one.

I just can't wait to see what the US's response is when the Shiites win the election and their Prime Minister is basically Saddam Hussein #2. Will they organize a coup?

I consider myself a conservative. I did B Comm (hon) at the University of Sydney and now work as an equity trader at Deutsche Bank making a lot more money than you. .

Talking to people in my course I'd say around 80% were conservatives. The liberals could be found in the arts and journalism courses. The stupid socialist pacifist potheads who don't contribute anything to society are the liberals in academia where I live.
