Generally speaking soldiers aren't paid WELL but that is according to rank. Non-coms don't tend to have much to begin with so they are happy to make money and get benefits. Commissioned officers tend to make a decent living with benefits.

I have also talked to many navy personnel who joined the Navy specifically for the adventure and the possibility of visiting ports of call or being assigned overseas.

Also many people join the military to take advantage of the G.I. Bill which provides them with money they wouldn't otherwise have for college after serving for a period of a few years.

I am not advocating joining the army, personally I come from a family that scoffs at such things (we are hispanic serving in the army isn't considered honorable). Despite that I also have a huge problem with the whole groupthink mindcontrol thing they put you through. I mean soldiers aren't robots but I don't need or want that lifestyle and culture. BUT I can't deny the benefits and rewards a young person most definitely receives by serving in the military.

I'm going to answer yours with another question.

What keeps the youths in South Central Los Angeles (and other places) in gangs like the Crips and Bloods ? (not the best analogy but it still works)

The need for acceptance? Fellowship? Camaraderie? Structure? Adventure? Excitement?

I'm sure there's a lot more to it, but I'm not in their shoes so I can only speculate upon the reasons.

Crips and Bloods ain't being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and getting maimed/killed. LIke your comment about Acceptance, Fellowship, Camaraderie, Structure, Adventure, or Excitement? Maybe a combo. What about money and job security? What about the fact there's no equivalent civilian job for an Infantry Grunt beyond general laborer?

Well actually a lot of people receive special training with technical equipment that could be applied to civilian life. But yeah a frontline soldier hasn't gained any skills in the military useful to the outside world. Oh well... you choose the life you lead.

As I said, it wasn't the best possible analogy. However, Crips and Bloods willingly risk life and limb to be a part of something that doesn't guarantee them success or job security.

Anyway, how can you honestly think about job security when your occupation puts you in the direct line of fire?

In regards to money, the only wealthy in the military are the top brass of the Commissioned Officers.

Yet you both have implemented stereotypes.

Or was that intentional?

LOL
