I seem to have the name as an excellent warm-up DJ in sydney!! Good that im recognised as that, but frustrating trying to break away from it!

Basically u have to play tracks that people will dance to but not steal the main show, u have to build you set, this is what makes or breaks a warmup dj, if you cant build a set and really lift the energy then you're not doing your job.

You can't just start out with massive tunes.

It doesn't have to be THAT slow....and you just have to look. I don't really like the slower stuff all that much, but every now and then i find a great, slower track. So eventually I built up a collection. So it took me a while.

If there's absolutely nothing....find someone to warm up for you..maybe tag team or something

Funny this topic should come up. Another site I regularly use has just posted a fantastic article on the art of the warm-up set. It's slightly geared towards hard dance but the principles are the same (and there's some good comments from one of the UK's best up-and-coming trance DJ's). Here's the article:

Check Steve Hill's comments at the end as well: very useful and relevant.

Hope this helps: the warm-up set is the most important of the night IMHO and often the hardest to get right.

that was brilliant thanks

Actually, if respect and fame is such a big thing for you, you're more likely to get respect (and repeat bookings) from the promoter if you play a carefully programmed, slower, gradually building warm-up set than belting out all your big tunes straight away. The upcoming DJ's will respect you because you're being courteous enough to (a) the promoter, (b) them, and, most importantly (c) the night itself to make sure the party is built up nicely, and clubbers will respect you a lot more because there's nothing more intimidating to them than an empty dancefloor pumping out demonically fast tunes.

The night isn't about you, you know: it's about the flow of the music and the pace of the party. And may I politely suggest you're probably DJ'ing for the wrong reasons if all you care about is the fame. I'm surprised you're getting any bookings at all if your attitude is like that.

well i think this depends mostly on what it is you play.

for example, i play techno. now i fucking love it all so i have a lot of nice groovy techno that isn't all-out banging stuff, so i could quite easily play a warm-up at a techno night.

i think its easier to pass off with techno as most of it is pretty pumping anyway... you play faster trance or spomething? if so, you are going to have to find a slightly slower sound tha you like, otherwise yes, you are limited.
