One time when I lived in a different apartment by myself I really got into this Frankie Knuckles Warehouse set from 1982 (at 1pm), next thing I know a few minutes later superintendent knocks on the doors telling me she heard loud music few doors away, asking me to lower the volume down It wasn't loud, or at least the volume/bass wasn't even halfway up! Weird people ...

Nice work Starsearcher. The first is always the best

I was at Kandaio's apartment the other day and we were in his studio room recording a set and decided to throw on the sub for a bit to have some fun. Well, not 5 minutes later the super walked in (or course we couldn't hear him knocking) asking us to turn it down; apparently the people from above him stated "We like the music, honestly it's awsome...but our bathroom mirror fell off and all our pictures are crooked now, so it's becoming a nuisance." Turns out his roomates desk spilt all his pens and utensils all across his desk onto his floor too.

Maybe we had it a touch too loud

They just walked in? OK thats HIGHLY illegal. The super can never allow himself into your apartment without 24 hours written notice unless its an emergency (and even then it has to be well documented). Id be filing a complaint myself if i were you.

yeah, slap 'em with a complaint...

and that still didn't answer my question - you are legally allowed to disregard the noise complaints until 11pm?

http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/municode/1184_591.pdf

That's the City of Toronto by-law regarding noise. Stereos appear to fall under the specific 11pm-7am prohibited noise times, although there is also a "general prohibition" which states:

"No person shall make, cause or permit noise or vibration, at any time, which is likely to disturb the quiet, peace, rest, enjoyment, comfort or convenience of the inhabitants of the City."

...so it probably comes down to a judgement call. If after 11pm, you are certainly violating the noise bylaw if someone can clearly hear your music. Before 11pm though, it depends if a resonable person's peace, rest, enjoyment etc. would be disturbed by the volume.
