A good 50% of epic trance is instrumental, ruling it out from being pop music. Another 20% would stand up on its own as instrumental music. Then there's 30% which is just a feel-good vocal blabbering about sunsets and love to an incredibly weak instrumental backing.

They fall under the "stand up as instrumentals" because the vocal version is almost invariably crap, and were never intended to have vocals in them.

Instrumental pop music, pop music, what's the difference. Vocals are the difference between trance and pop music? What? No, minus the vocals, the track is epic trance. So non vocal epic trance = instrumental pop music. Sandstorm is not pop? Chldren is not pop? Pop = Popular music.

Now the content of the lyrics is what makes pop music? And because the backing is maybe bad epic trance, it's different than other epic trance? HELLO? What are you talking about?

Pop music is one particular style of music. Pop= the most popular style of music at the time. And in modern music, pop has never been instrumental. Pop is vocal-centric. Pop is pop because people like singing along to it. Any music that puts vocals and lyrical content above musical content can be considered pop music, whether it's "with a beat", "with guitars" or "with a Scottish bag-pipe section".

Epic trance is obviously not pop, the very things that define epic trance prevent it from being pop. Thus I dismiss ATRC as pop. To me it isn't epic trance.

Now I await your bullshit synopsis of epic trance involving the words "supersaws", "melodies" and "accessible". None of which will ever, in a million years, make epic trance pop music.

It doesn't have to have vocals. It can just be a catchy melody that sticks in your head for weeks; a melody most can easily recognize. The vocals just enhance this.

A catchy melody does not make anything pop. What kind of fucking stupid statement is that?

Why not? If alot of people know the melody by heart, it's popular. Pop music.

No, pop music = popular music. Music that has entered popular culture through radio for example. Music intended for mass consumption. Music that caters to a broad audience. Music with chorus easily memorable melodies/vocals. Melodies and vocals that you can hum and sing. That get stuck in your head. Easily accessible music. Music you hear on the radio. Music you see on MTV or other music video channels.

Not all pop music has vocals, and not all music with vocals is pop.

Well it's a classic epic trance track, regardless of what it is to you. Vocals don't define epic trance. Structurally the track is epic trance.

No, the fact that you see an epic trance track regularly on european top 20 dance charts makes it pop music. The fact that several have made it in to widespread play in almost every country including america makes it pop music.

Wow, the top 20 dance charts? Holy shit Batman, we have trance in the dance charts? You think you're precious classic trance never topped a dance chart? Several track have made it to widespread play, you say? That must be half a dozen tracks out of several thousands over 9 years. Fucking hell, it puts Britney and Madonna in the shade, don't it?

I live in Britain, which is the country where EDM has the highest profile anywhere in the world. In a year where dance music spent 10 weeks at number one and we had Top 10 albums by The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Faithless and Groove Armada, epic trance barely made a dent on the radio or TV.

Say what you like, music does not become pop just because it appears on MTV. There is a distinctive genre of music that is only definable by the term "pop". That is pop music. Anything else is not pop music. It is as simple as that, and your mardy elitist rants to the contrary are wrong.
