Contrary to popular belief, women were not treated as sub-human 50 years ago. So much for "choice".

Besides, aren't we all forgetting that feminism was an American, not Canadian movement?

So yes, I can think of a few things to put on the Canadian $50 bill that have more historical significance to Canada than the feminist movement.


P.S. Bare breasted women on the bill would be fine. In fact, just the bare breasts would be fine.

This was my point. Sure the feminists did their thing (for right or for wrong) but there are far greater moments in history that affect EVERYONE in this country to this day. Why didnt they print the photo of the queen and trudeau re-patriating the constitution? MUCH more impact on the way we live (for better or worse) than the first woman MP. sorry but i cringe when they celebrate the first woman this or the first black that. Ironically its the ones who want to be treated as equal who point out the differences.

Famous Five Image Preserved on Canadian Currency

Feminists in Canada are determined to have their heroines - even if their choice is very limited. This has caused them to reach down and pluck from Canadian history some very flawed women, indeed, to hold up as role models. They selected the so-called Famous Five women who brought the legal challenge to the Privy Council in England in 1929 to allow women to be appointed to the Canadian Senate. By that time, however, Canadian women had already obtained most of their equality rights, e.g., women could own and manage their own property from 1882 onward, they had obtained the right to vote nationally in 1918 and the first woman was elected to the House of Commons in 1921. Women by that time also had the opportunity to enter into the traditional male professionals of law, medicine and engineering. The truth is the achievement of the Famous Five was minor indeed. These five women were also racists, and anti-Semites. They promoted eugenics and believed that breeding of the feeble minded as well as the uneducated and unwashed masses should be curtailed. They also cautioned "whites" to protect themselves against the "black and yellow," races and directed their venom especially at the Chinese and Blacks. Notwithstanding all this, feminists insisted that these women were their heroines.

Unethical Tactics

You may recall that MP, Jean Augustine (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) used unethical tactics on December 11, 1997, and managed thereby to push through a false "unanimous consent" from the House of Commons to erect a statue on Parliament Hill of these five women (See Reality, January/February 1998, p. 7). Parliament Hill, however, by tradition has been reserved only for statues of the Fathers of Confederation, former Prime Ministers and kings and queens. However, the ever supportive Chrétien government permitted the feminists to get their way. Consequently, the statue of the so-called Famous Five was duly placed on Parliament Hill in an official ceremony on October 18, 2000. It was a flashy ceremony attended by the Prime Minister, Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin, and cheered on by hundreds of Ottawa school children brought in to assist in the ceremony. REAL Women members were also present at this ceremony. We held up signs letting the truth be known. Our signs pointed out the fact that these women were infamous racists who were not role models or heroines to most Canadians. Our demonstration was reported in the newspapers and put a definite damper on the whole affair.

Famous Five Image on Canadian Currency

The feminists are continuing their revisionist history about these women and have now successfully lobbied the federal government to have their image depicted on new Canadian currency.

That is, at the present time, the federal government is designing new paper currency in order to increase the visibility of the federal government by using supposedly "unifying" themes that reinforce Canadian identity. The feminists have seized this as an opportunity to have the "famous Five" image placed on the currency.

The themes for this new currency, by the way, were supposedly chosen following "consultation" with citizens across the country. However, according to the Ottawa Citizen (June 4, 2000), it was the Calgary-based Famous Five Foundation and the National Liberal Women's Caucus who lobbied the federal government to redesign Canadian currency to include a portrait of the Famous Five. Documents obtained from the Citizen under the Access to Information Act also reveals a strongly worded letter from female Liberal MPs and senators to Finance Minister Paul Martin. Documents released also indicate that the Prime Minister's Office and Cabinet ministers were heavily lobbied by this small band of feminists.

As a result, the new $50 bill fill feature the image of Thérèse Casgrain, a Quebec feminist who brought the vote to Quebec women, and the Famous Five Women.
