Breakdowns and builds? Naw, both genres have them. Heck, techno made ludicrous use of them back in the early 90's just as much as trance has in recent years.
Melodies? Techno's had them too. Strings Of Life, anyone? Again, it's only in recent years that techno shyed away from melody, more as a resentment to trance's over-abundence use of them than anything else.
Some might say that it's down to the drum programming, that techno tends to be more intuitive whereas trance has gotten very simplistic. This aruguement's a load of crock when you throw Oliver Lieb into the equation.
The only difference between trance and techno tends to be what made the two splinter in the beginning: atmosphere. Specifically spacey, heavenly, or euphoric elements tend to dominate trance and futuristic, robotic, distopian elements are common in techno.

Listen to like Deetron, or Patrik Skoog, maybe Ken Ishii, or maybe even hideyuki eto.
Then listen to "Generic Trance Artist"
I hope you notice a difference.
