i thought id do 3 better and send 4 fxps of filthy vanguard acid your way (PM me your email addresses), one of which (hard acid.fxp) is the exact patch i used for that hard house song (please dont plaigerise it! i provide these fxps for learning purposes). i dont want anything in return except that if these helped you in anyway, put something back into this community by helping someone else out with a prob they might have. have fun! in my song i used a parametric EQ to cut some off the sub by about 3 dB and a tiny little boost around 1400hz just to keep it clean, hard and harsh. now my ears are ringing

this sound has lost its trendy-ness right? Havent heard a song which uses these sounds for a while now... Still, its a great way to uplift a tune

yea. the thing with the 303 acid sound is its overused. but theres a reason why its overused. like the supersaw on the JP - it just sounds PHAT! the reason why they are cliches is cuz they sounded phat then and they still sound phat now! but i can see how some people tire of it - you can hear it everywhere. i only noticed it recently when i got into production but nearly every track on the first wipeout videogame soundtrack has a 303 in it. quite a few daft punk songs are built practically on 303 lines (*very* well made ones though). alot of hardhouse use 303 type acid lines, and ive heard a few nukleuz black records which exploit this to devasting effect. even more psy artists use 303s or 303 emulators for wobbly synth hooks, basslines, acid, you name it.

rebirth is a software remake of the roland tr-808, tr-909 and tb-303 - the basics of old techno. its a testament to how fucking cool these things sound that practically every dance musician still uses stuff from these machines, whether via emulations or samples or the real thing.

audiorealism bassline gets alot of good reviews. you can get a demo off the audiorealism website. i dunno. it probably does sound alot like a 303 but having never owned the real deal i couldnt say. for the purposes i use 303s for, i found the distortion was a bit weak to make the really filthy, ear splitting kind of acid im used to in hardhouse. i found muon tau rather bass heavy and very blurry in the bass department whereas i like 303 lines that are sharper and crunchier. bassline sounds...creamy. which can be good if thats your thing. EQ and compression fixes it up to some extent but i love the acid you can make out of vanguard. the resonance on vanguard seems to go so much further than bassline and tau - to the point of mullering your ears. whereas i needed to pile on SC_Overdrive (freeware distortion plugin) and an external fruity filter to sharpen it up to the sound i liked. both bassline and tau are well good for those smooth wobbly techno 303 lines though but i reckon i could do them with vanguard + glide function.

I own the real deal, and I actually find myself using the Audiorealism more these days because it's so much easier to work with. Of course, if I'm building a whole track around the 303, I use the real thing (I don't think software will ever quite match it's thickness and warmth), but for simple acid lines the Audiorealism (with the right distortion) is more than good enough.

ding ding

Um, I'm not saying it's 'hopeless' to get a DECENT sound, but he asked about the one from the movie blade. I disagree with remdi that it was made in rebirth; I remember reading from 303infinity that he owned the synth they (pump panel) used to make that sound, and I can't recall the name of that 4OSC hardware synth, only what it looked like (he had it for sale on ebay, this was all in the item description).

Of course any sound can be made with software becauase the hardware synth are actually run by software, but, obviously, there's a reason they still make hardware synths and there's a reason they cost a lot, and it's not just trendy.

For example, in reason, I have to combine like 6 friggin' malstroms to get a decent sound and by then 1/2 of my CPU is eaten up...

I'm sure within 10 years hardware synths will have become obselete (probably).

It seems like anytime anyone in this forum says something that has to do with something expensive being better than something that isn't, the people who don't have what's expensive pop in and bitch about it. Ok, we got the point the 26th time, move on. (if you think I'm bragging, well, you lose, because i don't own any hardware synths :P)

dj alexg, acid lines are very very simple. try this:

I----I----I----I----
IAAAAIB-c-I--aaIaab-

where A = single 1/4 note
where B = single 1/2 note
where a = single 1/4 note (octave down)
where b = single 1/2 note (octave down)
where c = full length note

use the lab4 acid preset i gave you and turn the distortion up a little bit and open the filter cutoff just a tiny bit. play the notes on G4. there should be no gaps in between any of the notes. you can experiment with gaps but i wrote most of my acid lines to be played in key with my basslines at about 150 to 160bpm and be like a continuous pulsing machine gun along with the beat. on lab4's machine theres a very high resonance acid line with the cutoff open just a little which simply goes:

IAAAAIAAa-I----I----

where A = single 1/4 note
where a = sustained for 2 full notes (octave down)

simple but beautifully effective. use the wub acid preset i made for you and put these notes in G4 again. i play it around 155 to 160 bpm. up the distortion just a little and the resonance a tiny bit. thats a brutal acid line right there.

alot of those acid lines you hear in hardhouse are very simple variations on a 1 note rhythym (hence the april fools joke a while back about the 1 note hard house keyboard). you can make wandering 303 leads ala psy trance with these same patches only turn the glide function on and move up and down an arabian scale or improvise around ragas. and set glide to 1/64 and turn the distortion down a bit and maybe the resonance too for a smoother, wavering kind of sound.

these acid lines combined with a huge kick and a huge bassline can drive a track on its own. although the idea is to not overdo it. a good thing that lab4 did with machine is to build up the tune with an anxious synth melody and machine noises (courtesy of the virus b filter cutoffs + FM rotary - hahaha). then break it down and relaunch the track but drop everything but the bass, kick, hats and bring on the acid. that tune is an absolute stomper for about 1 minute after it relaunches and its back to winding it down. i find myself waiting for the driving acid line to come in and then its onto headnodding like a pigeon
