I've tried explaining to me friends the differences between the various types of electronica, even let them listen to samples of something like Paul Van Dyk versus Astral Projection versus Dieselboy, but they just tell me "techno is all the same, it's just electronic sounds and bass."

My reply to that is "Well then I guess there's no difference between The Beatles and Linken Park, after all it's just guitars and drums."

I just say Techno and let them have their fun with it. If they do seem interested, I'll get technical and explain to them that it's not DJ Sammy or the likes. Other than that, I just sit there and let them go, "Oh, weird."

I think one of the best conversassions I've had involving this type of thing went like this:

Me: Ah, I like Trance, I also DJ
Girl: (Whispers) Have you ever...
Me: huh?
Girl: (Whispers) You know...
Me: What? Done X? No.
Girl: (Whispers) Gotten head while you were DJ'ing...

I have other friends who listen to the stupid emo crap and everytime they're in my car instantly complain and say it all sounds the same... and begin to make beeping and booping sounds... and do the mm tss thing.

Ya most people call it techno, quite annoying really, I try to correct them, but there is only so much they can really understand just from you explaining it to them, and that's assuming they are actually open minded about learning.
