I don't believe in luck as an attribute, but certainly in the sense of chance. No person or object is "lucky", although many things that people accomplish are only accomplished because they happened to be in the right place at the right time, so to speak.

Having said that - the more persistent you are with something, the more likely it is that you're going to "get lucky". Since the circumstances around you are a little different every time you try something, trying many times is more likely to bring you that "luck" than trying just once.

Of course, some people may try their whole lives and never achieve that (possibly because they lack the necessary skill, or possibly for other reasons). And some people can put no effort into what they want and get it anyway. That's just the randomness of the universe though - and classifying it as "luckiness" makes no more sense than attributing the movement of the sun and the moon to a mysterious God.

No, I believe in skill.

When you have skill, you don't need luck.

Fucking right! Im on the EXACT same page with you. actually when I was voting, I was hesitant to choose YES for this very reason... the idea that luck is associated with "fate"... BULLSHIT The idea that your life is predetermined or whutever is a complete pile of horse shit IMO... a fanciful notion!

To me, luck is just random fluke coincidences that favour you (or disfavour you in terms of bad luck)... or as u said with "lucky" being an attribute... sure, if someone has lots of good stuff happen to them (tho not necessarily only them, i could also have 5 other friends who had just as good things happen) i would call them lucky, just meaning fortunate in general

I agree ENTIRELY with you post... especially the part about how thats just the randomness of the universe! 100%... i guess i use the term "lucky" loosely, even tho I don’t believe in its often intended meaning

[ as an example, i will often refer to Saturday nights at Guv or the Docks, or any night where im prolly popping e and/or staying up all night dancing to a trance/house/edm DJ, as "raves" when I am speaking to the uninformed... because just saying "im going out to a club" doesn’t always capture the essence of my night to ppl such as my parents or my friends (all of whom dislike edm). but if u say rave--though they most definitely aren’t--it gives them a truer idea of whut ill be doing: that is, staying up all night dancing till 7am+ in the morning, listening to some sickass trance beats and most likely popping some e! ) ]

A side note, especially to all you UW and Laurier students out there... this one comes from the mouth of LARRY SMITH himself... hes an arrogant, amazing, fantastic, cocky, bloody brilliant and incredibly funny Econ professor at UW... before his tests of exams, he ALWAYS says to us

"Now, ladies and gentlemen, I wish you much success on Thursday's midterm... because, honestly, to wish you "Good Luck" is completely ridiculous as it implies that the mark you receive will be based on luck! Instead, I wish you MUCH SUCCESS!"

Larry Smith students... feel free to "correct" the above speech where I may have made errors... it's been 3+ years since ive heard that glorious and riveting speech...... It pretty much captures the essence of his point tho... gotdamm! you gotta love that man! best professor ever!

I don't believe in luck.
I don't believe skill plays as an important a role as others think it does.
I don't believe persistance cuts the mustard either.

I beleive that we make things happen for us.
I believe it is our (positive) energy that brings things that appear like luck to us.
I believe that everything has a purpose and reason...and I believe that nothing is a coincidence.....every person that we meet has something to teach us....and that we must teach to them.
IMO every person has the ability to be a billionaire but some of us don't realize that we might not want to be billionaires and make choices that take us in a different direction.

One example of success with minimal skills and no help from mommy and daddy is Richard Branson:
"Nearly 30 years since he founded a mail-order record business called Virgin in the basement of a London church, Branson, now 47, has gone on to start more than 150 other businesses, and the Virgin name is emblazoned throughout the British Isles: on planes (Virgin Atlantic), trains (Virgin Rail), music stores (Virgin Megastores), drink bottles (Virgin Cola, Virgin Vodka), theaters (Virgin Cinemas), even investment funds (Virgin Direct). Altogether, you're looking at a $3.5 billion company with profits of $350 million. Not bad for a bloke who didn't finish high school.
His Virgin Records brought The Sex Pistols, Culture Club and many other big names.
Richard didn't breeze through school. It wasn't just a challenge for him, it was a nightmare. His dyslexia embarrassed him as he had to memorize and recite word for word in public. He was sure he did terribly on the standard IQ tests...these are tests that measure abilities where he is weak. In the end, it was the tests that failed. They totally missed his ability and passion for sports. They had no means to identify ambition, the fire inside that drives people to find a path to success that zigzags around the maze of standard doors that won't open. They never identified the most important talent of all. It's the ability to connect with people, mind to mind, soul to soul. It's that rare power to energize the ambitions of others so that they, too, rise to the level of their dreams."
