Had a great weekend. Spent soo much money and did a lot of running about, but really enjoyed Melbourne. Still a great city second time around.
Managed to see some venues on this visit too!
Friday: Alumbra - hmm. The website really made this place look good, so I was a bit disappointed on arrival - a bit small and a bit noisy (there's no need to crank the house everywhere guys!) - but not too bad. Good crowd considering we rocked up about 10pm. Nightmare to find walking from the city. Brisbane people, go to Jorge - it's bigger, better and doesn't cost ten bucks to enter.
Bass Station - nice. Brisbane's closest equivalent would be downstairs at Rockafellas, but this is much, much better! It's a rave club, no doubt... lots of UV, bright colours and two rooms (a bar and video screen showing the decks in the main room). Beautifully set up imo. I think we paid $14 with a website guestlist. Reasonably priced drinks. We had to wait until late in Midro's set (almost 3am) to hear the more uplifting stuff.
PS. The Melbourne shuffle looks like a goosestep crossed with Riverdance.
Saturday: Frostbite (Chapel St) - recommended by someone down there, we thought it was okay. Food was nice considering it's a bar mainly serving alcoholic slush puppies. Get used to paying $7.50 for those slush puppies too - or go to Crown where they probably serve Daquaris for three dollars.
Blue Bar (Chapel St) - more chilled than Alumbra at least, smart setup, good if you want to chat.
Seven - Haha, the taxi driver warned us as he was thrashing the Falcon through traffic to watch out for "dickheads at Seven... don't drink anything you didn't buy". As it turned out, there would be no problem with people buying any drinks for us...
The place was very clean and upper... half reminded me of a junior Family (ironically, Sat night there is called Family). $10 guestlist entry (thanks EM) seemed reasonable, but Jesus, the drink prices! I didn't know what to say I was asked to hand over $17 for two cowboys. They were damn half shots and require no skill to make. Next up was a Red Bull/Vodka... that'll be $13.50? Why do people think expensive drinks equal a classy club? Family is more than triple the size of Seven and has cheaper drinks. It's not in Melbourne though, so I guess you guys will have to suffer
Room 680/Volume - I had huge hopes for this place, as they seem to draw all the internationals. They have no problem showing it either, as witnessed by the Jan Johnson propaganda plastered on the video screen. I think our entry was $10 with a guestlist. Drinks were reasonable. The place was dead when we arrived (midnight) although it picked up a bit. They were still playing house at 2am. Great sound system.
Sunday: Two Tribes - Only met up with one TA - found Tachyon on the floor when Signum were playing. Vodaphone is big, but Rod Laver is massive. And it was packed for Prodigy - an awesome sight. I'm not a fan of them, but you can't help getting into it when everyone is cranking that hard. Overall a great event, even the smaller rooms were good - they didn't feel tacked-on or put in a janitor's closet like they would be up here.
MIKE owns... but I missed half his set! Oh, I spotted Molly Meldrum too. Also while we went past the ambos, there was someone who was lying face down on a stetcher with a sheet over their entire body... we thought they were dead but apparently not.
So yeah, that's about it.
I regret not going to 161 (couldn't find it), Metro, Hard Kandy and Bubble (not enough time). Also I was unable to attend a couple of other things due to only getting the details after I left Brisbane. Next visit!
