But seriously...
It may be to do with the American psyche...
Americans not only need an enemy figurehead, they look for one. The enemy, whoever that happens to be at a particular time, is usually refered to as whoever leads that group...Hitler, Stalin, Kim, Saddam, bin Laden, etc, etc. It makes the Americans feel comfortable knowing who they enemy is and who to take out. Obviously this completely misses the point, especially, especially where it concerns al-Qaida (who are not a traditional terrorist group like the rest, it is an ideology, who people are a member of if they say they are)
Bush (and his puppet masters) have various agendas they are trying to implement the world over (military and economic neo-con policies) and the war against terror (TWAT) has so far given them a green light to pursue everyone of these objectives. If they catch bin Laden, most people in America will think they have won...
And what does that imply for the objectives Bush and his cronies are going for?

I agree, though this is not all Americans, mainly conservatives. Anyone who thinks George is completely wrong, look at statememnts like "we can't change horses midstream" or "now that the Cold War is over, who's our enemy?" There have been many studies done about how people genrally favor Republican presidents in war time and Democrats in peace time.
