No this is real it was on both bbc and cnn and is linked to a pretty well respected Japanese academic. Its not as impressive as it looks if you read the details in the links i posted above. Basically the only real advance is the material the jacket is made of. It looks gray normally but is highly reflective so if you position a camera behind the guy/object and attach it to a projector that fires the image of whatever's behind him directly at him from the front. Not really all that remarkable.

Yea there's either cameras directly behind the guy that somehow project the capture video/images onto the ball or cube, or in the case of the jacket maybe there's multiple cameras built in that overlap each other and project the image onto the front? (...that jacket theory is just from a james bond movie, where the explanation for the invisible car was essentially just like that).

I've looked at the brochure that explains the process (http://projects.star.t.u-tokyo.ac.j.../Brochure-e.pdf), it's even worse than i thought - the illusion only works when you view the camouflaged object from a particular point (the same point from which the projected light is coming). I can't see this technology having any useful military camouflage type applications. It could still be good for surgery and aviation though.

quite clearly fake, the ball doesnt project the guy's face onto it when he moves it in front of his face - if it was to project what's behind it onto the surface, it would look clear, most definately fake

It doesn't project what's behind it, it projects what's in front of the camera. In this case the camera isbehind the guy pointing at the bookshelf behind him. It's all in the links... It's very simple technology, nothing really groundbreaking at all I don't see why people find it so hard to believe.
