Mind you, this is the americans we are talking about.....

the "Y" shaped thing is called the goal. they call it TOUCHDOWN because it just sounds good that way, because your not shooting a ball into a goal, u are running the ball. i guess its good for describing the action that just occured. the scorer just TOUCHed the score area DOWN the field. the area of the TOUCHDOWN is called the IN-ZONE. its better called that way instead of a goal, because really, it isnt a goal, its a zone.

actually he's my lil brother which makes him English (as his flag shows), he doesn't care too much about hockey, and is trying to understand what the sport is about, is it too much trouble to not be an ass all of the time ?

My bad. I just picked up a belittling tone from his posts.

BTW
3)How can it take about an hour for a 12 minute quarter?????

The quarters in American Football are 15 minutes in length.

It's actually called the END zone, and you dont have to run into the end zone to score a TD, you can also receive a TD pass whilst already being in the end zone

As for the padding, its always interesting to see that comparison, but I think we can all agree that due to the fact that there are fewer moments of action in the NFL due to timeouts, playcalling and all that, that the actual action is way harder. I mean, rugby looks more like they're wrestling with a ball, and a play (or whatever its called) goes on way longer. In football when the ball is snapped the o line and d line literally crash into each other. I don't see that kind of head to head collision as often in rugby really. (I'm not trying to start a rugby-football war here, these are just my observations)

As for 12 minutes taking up to an hour, that's partly due to the fact that a play ends whenever the ball touches the ground. So when the ball touches the ground, all the player line up for the next play etc. That takes time. And there are a lot of TV timeouts along with that.

As for the touchdown, I guess its because you touched the ball down at one end of the field.

I don't know why they call it football either.

No belittling tone, just an air of confusion mixed with a dash of not knowing what the hells going on...with regards to the quarter length i apologise, i believe candian football is 12 mins per quarter and thought the only difference to be the pitch size and the number of downs...if i am wrong by saying this, then i would like to take a moment to smite all the canadians who have misinformed me in the past

merci pour votre temps

If their stadium would be in Boston, you might have had a point

They wear padding for a few of reasons:

1. Many games are played on astroturf rather than grass which is very hard and also abrasive.
2. The owners who are paying them ridiculous sums of money don't want them to get hurt, so they made it league policy. There is some evidence that the additional padding can actually result in more injuries, but it has been largely disregarded.

15-minute quarters take and hour or more because time management is part of the strategy of the game, if the clock were simply allowed to run it remove an entire dimension of the game. A lot of it is also to allow for TV commercial breaks.

As for the bizarre naming of the game itself as well as many of the terms associated with the game, I believe it's due to the drastic degree with which the sport has evolved from its inception, although I'm not familiar enough with the details of the sport's history to provide any examples.
