i do have a life but most of it is linked to the internet in some way. can't work without it, can make plans without it...when people treat it like something outside of life, it affects me in the same way some asshole was calling me on the phone and harassing me.

Generally, I think places like these naturally tend to evolve into their own communities. The rules of real world don't apply, but that's not to say that there are no rules. This evolution results in its own forms of etiquette.
Further, the internet has a profound effect on many ppl's lives today. It's communication, on a free and wide scale. There is still a strong distinction between reality and virtual reality, but give it time. In a hundred years, there won't be.
