Logic 7 Pro is great. Lots of awesome included instruments and FX, all of which are very CPU friendly, also quite stable unless you do thing to piss it off that you shouldn't.
I really dont think the learning curve is too steep, after switching it didn't take long to adjust. The matrix editor is pretty comparable to any standard grid editor or piano roll. The arrange window is very self-explanatory, and the environment you can either avoid entirely, or use to create the modular studio of your dreams.
The built-in plug-ins are an important consideration. The stuff that ships with Cubase are complete garbage. The ES2, EVOC20 and Sculpture are all awesome synths, the EXS24 sampler is top notch, and it comes with a full range of good quality FX. You buy Cubase, you're gonna need to outfit yourself with usable plugs, which will add up very fast. Logic 7 Pro is complete....it comes with enough to finish a project start to finish.
However, if you're only at 256MB of RAM, i'd recommended buying a 512 MB upgrade (up to 768MB total) as soon as possible
