goes like this:

Cable select will work most of the time, and usually you dont even have to set a jumper for it (least with all the drives I have, then again they are all Maxtors, so they probably all the same... ).

Just look on the top of the drive or the manual and it will tell you how to set it up. Just make sure you dont set it as the primary master, as that is usually your OS's drive.






Ultimate solution for any IDE questions: fuck it and get SATA caz it dosnt use 40+ year old cables to connect it.

installing a new hdd is much more difficult than just changing the jumper settings

the ide cable after it leaves the motherboard will have connections you can plug an hdd into. the middle one is designated to the "Slave" HDD, the end for "Master". the master hdd will be the one recognised by the bios first. this will be the C:, the slave will be D: and so on and so on

if you wish to configure the jumpers correctly the above diagram will not be accurate. the correct jumper settings will be displayed on the HDD, itself
