Point being, that doesn't happen particularly often, in either case.
Though driving around increasingly large SUVs and trucks makes me nervous, because I'm not sure whether I would ricochet away or be demolished in a crash. Either way, it's not a very safe car for 2005.
i just wouldn't feel safe driving a car where the spot normal cars have airbags is substituted with a 10 gallon tank of gas.
plus doesn't the cockpit always smell like gasoline?

It depends what VW you're talking about. The old bugs (like mine) keep going for decades with some regular upkeep. That's not the same as talking about recent VWs.

Yeah, those recent ones are now assembled in Mexico. The rest is obvious.

Well the gas tank is on the passenger side.
The car does have a mechanical, rubbery smell to the cabin (not gasoline). But to be honest I've grown into it, because it's very distinctive to the car.
Oh, and air conditioning. Roll down the windows. Yeah, that sucks in the summer.
