I have to agree here. I've made quite a few compilations, and sometimes you come across a couple of tracks that just do not work together, no matter how hard you try. Ususally it's the kicks don't compliment, but other things go wrong too.

Most tracks can fit together quite perfect, the others you are going to detect very soon... I think there should be no science about DJing (keys, bpm etc. fitting together), the tracks should better flow right out of your heart...

Track selection is so much more important than mixing skills, just look at Blank & Jones (although i dont like them very much), they are mostly successful because of their pure trance sound... their mixing is quite bad, most of us could do it better, i think. But their tracks go straight to your heart, you simply will remember them as Djs who really touched you.

Same thing with PvD. He is a true "fast mixer", his sets have a lot of energy, even if his mixing is not as good as progressive Djs could do it... but his track selection will definitely make you freak out, he is in my opinion by far the best DJ of the world, better than tiesto and AvB, simply because of his straightforwardness, his perfectness and his very own sound/track selection. No one else is able to combine for example tilt's progressive and chris liebing's hardcore techno tracks in one set like he does.

All sets which sound distinctively are not these who are mixed obeying the track's keys... So just search tracks which sound good, combine them in a good order and mix them agreeablely, not too boring... Its much more important than being able to mix boring tracks completely perfect.

Who agrees?

well you have a point there, but really...what dj would spin tracks they think are boring? Boring is different to different people....I find a lot of PVDs selections boring, for example.

im sure most djs know what im talking about...

djing is a art, you think the best artists go and label everything before they do it? or do they just go with the flow?

At first I thought 'cmon man keying records and knowing what tunes will sound good together is what makes a good dj' but then you say this and I realize I can't do that at all. I wish I could, but I can't even key melodies that well. But when I get into the groove a mix, I also, get a subconcious feeling of what melody or beat should come next
And this only comes with knowing your tracks well.

I've tried in the past writing tracks down that go well together, but It just didn't stick.

I thought that in order to be a good dj like tiesto you gotta play the same tracks together repeatedly. lol such is not the case...

(not to knock tiesto too much, he's still the man! )

I got a question for your djs that write down the keys and harmonically mix. When you change the pitch to control the bpm, doesn't that change the speed of the song, which changes the pitch which ultimately changes the key of the song? I've never understood harmonic mixing, even though I've heard it many times on various sets.

Yes it does, you have to take it into consideration.

lol

mixing in key is great, sure, but if u try and mix every track in key with the last your guna be limited to what u can play and when u can play it, if you're putting that before anything else then you are making big sacrifices as a dj. a good dj can mix pretty much any 2 tracks together smoothly, as already stated.
