oh man - that raiden track 'fallin' is gonna knock you senseless its deeper and darker than epilogue. i reckon its the reason why the AIR EP is impossible to find.

also, the klute mix of morning light is even better than the original

With house you have kicks on all 4 beats....with dnb you need to mix while listening to the snare drum hits on the 2 and 4. Most of the time the snares are very clear and you shouldnt have a problem.

any dnb experts or producers please correct me if im wrong!

Thanks!

i feel the same way, when i get the urge (not often) to mix some dnb/jungle, I find it easiest to listen for the highs... thats just me.. im sure others will agree aswell..

I've been mixing dnb along with techno for years now. Heres a few filthy new bits you might like..

Amit - Second Cut
Hive - Krush
D-Bridge - True Romance
Bad Company - Bullit Time !!!
Vector Burn - Oxygen Freeze VIP

Some older bits:

Breakage - Disco 45
Hive - Neo
Calyx - Killa
Keaton & Loxy - Judgement Day VIP
Stakka & Skynet - Clockwork (Stakka Remix) !!!
Black Sun Empire - Smoke (Sinthetix Remix)
Ancronix - The Operative (Unusual Incident Remix)

After mixing dnb for so long I personally think the scene is going a bit stale. The fact you might hear a new tune being played out by a big name DJ or Producer and knowing you wont be able to own it on vinyl yourself for atleast 6 months (on average) is crap. By the time you own it your bored of hearing it. Fuckin dubplate culture

yea i know what you mean. i heard the klute mix of morning light about 3 to 4 months before it got released. on john peel. once i got the dub i rinsed it for 3 to 4 months and it kind of lost some of the magic when i eventually managed to get it on vinyl. its nice to see what dnb is gonna be like 4 months down the line. but it makes all the current tunes seem stale. and by the time its eventually released, the new dubs make them look stale too.

i do agree on recent dnb. i cant really think of many memorable 2005 anthems so far. even late 2004 i dont remember any.

one of my friends describes it as 'minty' and it sort of is. alot of incredibly well produced, playskool reece bassline driven tracks. that just loop over and over and just dont seem to go anywhere.

contrast that with exile & temper d - warehouse in 2002 when it looked like dnb was the verge of exploding and its crazy. not as well produced as more recent efforts but the distortion builds and builds and builds! and at a certain point you lose a sense of bassline looping around cuz its so aggressive and so constant and it just never lets up. absolute dancefloor killer.

or raiden - fallin' which is so fucking deep it'll make you want to cry (also 2002 - my god what a year). i cant help but feel something got lost in the transition from 2003 to 2004.

shopping on juno i havent heard that many dnb records in the past 6 months that i instantly go 'i have to have that!'

that said, going shopping for psy cds, i hear alot of tunes i have to have. i guess if the dnb gets boring its time to take a detour elsewhere and see what other great music is out there. then maybe come back to dnb when your interest peaks up a bit.

Wise words mate, we both see the scene in very similar ways. Theres definately a few forthcoming tunes I'm well into. A few are:

Marcus Intalex - Immersed
Makoto - Eastern Dub
Break and Hydro - Immaculate

A few D-Bridge tunes too..

But theres few tunes inbetween waiting for bits like the above. I can look back to about a year ago and I was ordering new vinyl every week, usually 3-4 bits. So now I'm just buying 90% techno which is all good because i love the techno!

Defintately agree with you on the levels of distortion in todays dnb. Actually makes my ears ache lol

heheh. 2002 - i was buying dnb records every fortnight. trance and bass looked like it was going somewhere! calibre was making fresh and funky tunes. the whole black sun sound was emerging. and it was good. dnb was broadening and taking on board so many different styles.

now trance and bass is dead in the water. calbire is still making funky tunes. just not quite so fresh. black sun have dropped the techstep, synthetic sound and are now doing dirty reece tracks. and well, so is everyone else.

i should check it out some techno. in recent years techno seems to have gotten alot harder, alot darker - it seems closer to hard house now than it does to old detroit techno. some of it is quite interesting though.

I wouldnt put techno anywhere near hard house mate. Theres so much techno about! And the way techno tunes are structured makes for some pretty mad possibilities on the decks I've just upgraded my mixer to an Allen & Heath Xone 92, been playing with the two filters plus the LFO's makes for some mad mixing! Its pure fun! ...Whereas i find dnb mixing more limited.

Heres some tunes from my box you might like to hear:

Andrew Richley & Richard Rivera - Tank Styles
Andrew Richley & Richard Rivera - Rumba De Barcelona
Muhle - Pillow Madness
Danilo Vigorito - Imaginary Boy
Umberto Carmignani - Element A
Anything by Umek

Another thing is its alot easier to be more original when mixing techno due to the massive amounts of tunes comin out each week.

Hah, I sound like a techno preacher
