Ok - you caught me. I'm making shit up. People just use things because they are difficult, bad, and don't meet their needs.

Try this - do a little research into product marketing, specifically on brand/product preference - then we can discuss this further.

Jester

After all:

If something doesn't meet your needs, causes big problems and overall is a horrible product - 85% of the people will use it - just because it is given to them (directly to their house, machine, etc).

After all - that is why 85% of the users use AOL - right? I mean, after all, AOL has sent a CD (given directly to the consumer, for free) to every house in the USA and Canada.

(I hope you sense my sarcasm).

RJ, we all know that the filthy, unwashed masses are dumb as hell and don't know what "that thar intarnat machine" does anyhow

PS: AOL isn't just a browser, the point of those CDs it to get people to sign on for AOL's internet service.

note the contradiction. AOL is not provided directly to the machine.

IE ships with pretty much every home computer. It's right there under My Computer when u turn the computer on. Most people are just fucking lazy. As someone who has worked with computers since 1994, I know how lazy the average home computer is. Same reasons why so many people just listen to shit on the top 40 radio stations instead of exploring new music.

But why the hell are we arguing this? Firefox is a better piece of software. Period. The guy felt up his mom. I love u rj.

That isn't the point I was trying to make.

The point I was trying to make is that marketing and specifically brand/product preference (based on where the internet is within product diffusion theory) says that users are risk adverse and will always use the product that meets their needs the best.

Matt's arguement was that people use IE because it is given to them, for free, directly (with the purchase of Windows) - and that is why the SIGNIFICANT majority of people use IE - NOT because IE meets their needs and is the least "risky" in terms of use.

My argument is: if that was the case (a SIGNIFICANT MAJORITY of people used products that were free and directly available) then AOL would be the ISP of choice for a significant majority of internet users (since AOL is also shipped with Windows and has {for a fact} been sent to every household within the USA with free usage, clear instructions).

The fact is that AOL has less than 25 million subscribers in the USA (which has a universe of over 150 million users). Clearly - Matt's arguments for IE usage don't follow accepted preference theory.

Capiche?

IE may meet the needs of it's users. But that doesn't mean Firefox isn't a better product. If most of the people who use IE were...

A) Not lazy

B) AWARE of other products

Then we might be seeing a different story.

Microsoft is ingenious though with their marketing and such... I bet Bill Gates won a lot of games of Monopoly while he was in Uni.

Microsoft is smart with their marketing and product placement/distrubtion (however marketing and product placement have little to do with monopoly).

I use Firefox and I hope it never becomes popular, if it does you'll have all the nerds and pornsites figure out a way to get all the popup shit past Firefox and then Firefox will just be another IE.

But anyway, I love my Firefox and Bill Gates can eat my ass with a spoon.
