Michel Cretu (the man behind Enigma) almost single-handidly created what I like to dub "erotic house". Sure, house in general tends to be quite sexy, but never erotic. After Sadness, tons of copycats tried to cash in on that sound (heck, you should see the soft porn soundtracks of the early 90's -filled with the stuff), but even Cretu couldn't top it (he tried with a few numbers, of course, probably most notably Age Of Loneliness -which Jam & Spoon actually did an interesting remix of!).
Not only did Sadness become a hit with soft porn soundtracks, it also became a hit with fetishists for that same eroticism it creates when you play it (especially in conjuction with Principles Of Lust off the album).
Personally, I preferred Mea Culpa.
Note: No, 'erotic house' isn't really a genre. I just like to call it that so don't go bugging Ish about its exclusion on his guide.
