techno is oriented around the rhythm, trance is oriented around a melody.

Ironically enough, most people seem to find techno to be more hypnotic than trance, for it's emphasis on rhythm and percussion leads it to discard big filter sweeps and arps and whatnot, things that would otherwise distract you.
