My dad had the brilliant idea of vacationing in Croatia during the war in the 90's. I had the unique experience of pulling over the side of the road as tanks drove by us and all throughout the week a fighter plane or two would fly overhead. I guess it built character ...
Other than that, my house caught on fire in what was a comedy of errors. None of us knew the house was on fire ... it happened around 4am. Some guy driving along saw our house on fire, stopped in the middle of the street, and banged on our door. He then said something like "do you know your house on fire???" to which we sleepily replied, "huh?" After a few more "huhs?" we ran outside to see that our house was indeed the subject of a really splendid blaze. We then ran back into the house and grabbed the fire extinguisher. We pointed it at the fire, depressed the handle, and were rewarded with a pathetic "pssst" of an empty extinguisher. Unbeknownst to me, one of my dumbass roomates had "played" with the fire extinguisher the previous week. Apparentely even shooting a little bit, will result in the pressure for the entire tank being released even if you're not holding down the trigger ... or at least for that tank. Plan B: The garden hose. At that point the fire was of sufficient size to mock us with our mesely garden house and it was quite evident that it was an exercise in futility ... but it was fun playing amateur fireman with our little garden hose (no not the garden hose that some of you perverts may be thinking of).
The first thing we did of course was call the fire department. And considering we lived RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from a freaking fire station, we were relatively unconcerned. Naturally we wait ... and wait ... and wait, suspiciously eyeing the still-darkened fire station that we could have tossed rocks at. They have the audacity to wake us up at odd hours in the morning with their sirens, and at our time of need ... time for payback for that annoying siren all teh time ... we get nothing. Then, a single solitary fireman casually strolls out of the station seemingly oblivous to our plight. We start jumping up and down, waving, and shouting to him that our house is on fire. The fireman glances over and jumps in shock because the house across the street from the firestation is on fire. He does an immediate 360 and runs back into the firestation. To cut my babbling short, a fire truck from a different firestation arrives at our house before a firetruck from the firestation across the street "got" there. They probably could have run one of those super long ladders from a ladder truck from where they were and fought the fire without even moving their trucks ... but alas they were second on the scene which is one of the most pathetic things I've ever witnessed.
Anyway, the fire made us famous, we got in the news. But to add further insult to injury we were henceforth branded as "homeless" people by the media:

Note some of the discrepancies between the news report and my account. Yes the reporter was a dumbass who got the number of people living in the house wrong, how we learned of the fire wrong, and yes even our street address wrong. Our subsequent living in the house after the fire is also a midly entertaining story, but I'm getting tired of writing.
