Oakey has never been much of a DJ. He tends to play songs from the very beginning to very end, mixing in and out of the very last bars. His only talent there is an ability to beatmatch over such a short phase that the records could well be out of synch and they wouldn't have time to become apparent. Oakey's praise in the 90s came because he was playing music that was very new and exciting at the time. Today, trance has gone so long without much upheaval that everyone is playing what Oakey is playing- they're just better mixers than him.
