If you don't have any experience with kids then try some volunteer work, or do what im doing and go into a secondary school for one day a week, that really is the only way to find out if its what you want to do. The subject you teach would have to be one of your a levels/highers whatever (i think), go for the one you enjoyed the most, if you have a passion for the subject it will come across in your teaching, plus you will enjoy it more. Also don't forget a lot of the holidays you get you will need for planning and marking so its not as good as it sounds. I think the starting wage is about 19K at the moment so its good for local work without having to travel to a city, and when you qualify in 3 years time its bound to have gone up by then. Im not trying to put you off, just think about it hard before you decide as it is a tough course. If you want to know anymore feel free to PM me. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do

In the U.S, teachers make shit compared to what they are deserved. They are a major contributor to social youth & make nothing to what they derserve. Honestly its the last job I want. My cousin is a teacher. He went 6 years to college at Eastern Illinois University. Now he's 37 & I made more money that he ever made when I was 23, a few years back. Ya, the benefits are great, but only if you stay with it 25 years. Its alot to deal with here at least, 50-60 hour weeks including homework. My friends sister is a teacher & taught for an ex gf's kid of mine. She hated it. she's going nuts by the amount of work load & minimum pay(like $38k a year) for kicking her ass & dealing with 7-8 year olds. IMO teachers & cops are the most underpaid profession around, in the States. I dont know but i hope other countrys are better.

I've done it part time and it's not as easy as you think for a number of reasons. Kids are a pain in the ass, there always a number of trouble makers who can make life difficult for you. You have to be part entertainer and part disciplinarian. If it doesn't come natural doing a stand up routine in front of a tough audience everday then you'll wish you never picked this "easy" career.

My Dad is a teacher he's the school discipline guy (fucking need it at that school). Him and my uncle (who until recently was rector of one of the best schools in scotland, reaching it's highest rank ever in his last year) say the same thing, be tough from the start, you can let of later but once you let it off you'll never get it back.

But anyway I thought about it too but can't be arsed with the little shits who 1) don't want to be there, 2) I won't want to teach, 3)Have to be there.

Also it's not very easy to get them chucked out these days.... which they know.... and they use.

Im not doing it just because i think its easy - i know that i'll have to put up with some pain-in-the-ass kids and im quite prepared to do that. I meant it would be easy when compared to the type of job i would get with my current uni degree (electronic engineering) where i would probably have to make full use of my brain everyday.

Maybe you should try what I'm doing. MSc System Level Integration in livy you'd probebly get 6k to do it too (SAAS paying fees too, nearly 10k of support, not bad if you can stay at home). And you get a joint masters degree from 4 unis (edinburgh+hw+glasgow+strathclyde).

Best part is the whole place was set up with scottish exc money so scots with a 2.2 basicly get in and everyone I've spoken to got the 6k scholarship too. (first and only time I've got to play the race card lol)

The job I'm likely to be doing won't be all brain either tho I'm a bit different. But actual work isn't as intense as you probebly think everyone needs to chill out too.

But it isn't easy, harder than last year of uni definatly and I've not started my project yet (though you get to pick from a range from all the unis). Also on the plus side it isn't as full of fucking geeks as I thought it would be (tho there are loads of indian and chinese guys and so on).

To find out if the kids are a pain the ass, pick a grade you would want to teach and then go to a school and volunteer (similar to a teachers' assistant) to help the teacher. That way you are exposed to the teaching profession bit by bit.

Although there are plenty of teachers whom I absolutely HATE, they all deserve much more than they're currently paid.
