It's a very emotional thing for me.
People are different and what people expect from a DJ is so different. I think the majority of people like seeing a guy who is good at what he does and also enjoying it.
In all my years as a DJ I know for a fact that the majority of clubbers like to see a DJ connect with the music. If the DJ let's go then so do a lot of the clubbers.
Personally I find the likes of Digweed and PvD really dull. Hence the reason why I never want to see either of them again.
I don't like the kind of DJ who is too up there to shake the hands of clubbers either. This just hacks me off totally, I agree that it can get to be hard work sometimes of someone is there in the middle of a mix but I usually give them the just a moment sign and then oblidge with a smile and a hand shake just to let them know that I appreciate the time this clubber took out to come and let me know that he likes what I am doing.
Whilst I don't get this in the same amount as big names I thrive in interaction with the crowd and am definately a people guy behind the decks. I am there for them, they are not there for me. They are paying to see/hear me perform not the other way around.
This is not ment as a bragging statment but more as an example:
At one of the places I play every month I have a very large group of University girls who come to see me spin regardless of the headliner and the promoter of that night has told me in no uncertain terms that the reason why his night works the best on that night is because of that group who bring masses of people with them to see when I play. They like the music (first and foremost) but also me and my personality. Other nights at this place have been axed but the promoter actually knows what a popular face is worth.
I get the closing sets and this ensures that there is a decent crowd till close. This is all due to connecting with people and showing my personality a little.
I'm not saying you have to be an epeleptic on speed but just let it go and enjoy a little. A lot of it has to do with confidence.
It's not so much about how much you dance or don't dance but just look as if you are meant to be there and be happy.

Try and stop me dancing when im mixing!
I do it enough at home, let alone when working -if im into the music, or if the crowd is giving a good response then im dancing around.
If you stand around looking bored, then how the hell do you expect to get people dancing to it.
And never ever fold your arms in the dj console....gives off such negative energy.

i've found my mixin to be better when i get into the music. if the crowd is lovin then i'll show em im loving it too. and when some1 in the crowd wants to shake your hand or theres a girl lookin all starry eyed at ya it certainly helps. not sayin thats what DJin is abt but damn it certainly gives u a lift!
ps nem - these uni chicks.. ya doggin any of em?

It personally shits me to not see the DJ interact with the crowd or be entirely motionless even if its a chilled prog set its still good to see them bopping away. I have never seen PVD nor am i a big fan of his style but from what i hear on and about these forums he seems like the most boring dj ever to watch reguarless of the fact his mixes are unbfuckinleavable i still like someone who puts on a show, will raise there arms up in the air, and make some form of interaction with the crowd.
I mean if your not up there enjoying it then why are you up there? Thats just how it comes across watching a stornch prick on stage.
Personally i cant help but bop away when I am having a spin, it also helps me keep in time

I get into the music and move around, but I'm not liek full fledged dancing in the booth. Although wthout fail, the worst trainwrecks I have heard out have been by DJs who went crazy dancing in the booth...i.e. Cox, Donald Glaude...but their energy really is addicting if you're in the crowd while they're spinning.

agreed. i'd prefer a dj who was into it and bringing the vibe up (donald glaude does one helluva job doing that) and the occasional trainwreck then the perfect flawless set with no emotion....that's me tho. it's all about a fun nite out in my opinion, and a dj who shows that he is into the music he is spinning contributes to that.
i like getting into it when i spin...much more enjoyable. and it does get the crowd going a lot more. even simple acknowledgements to someone's smile helps. one of the best moments i think anyway, is when someone catcalls/whistles during a breakdown, u acknowledge it by raising ur hand/smiling or whatever, and more whistles and yells are heard, and u start bouncing to the beat and before u know it, the whole crowd is into it and when the music slams back in...the reaction lets u kno the nite will be a good one.

ha, sometimes Ill just play with headphones on so it is completely silent in my room and my roommate might sneak a peck of me jumping around to silence.
I personally cannot stand still when I dj, i enjoy teh music too much so I am always moving and smiling. Whenever I see a dj play im also jumping around n stuff givin him/her dj love, and I think it makes the set a whole lot better. in fact that how I met teh resident at the big club here.
